Notre Dame to hire attorney as AD

In its search for a new athletic director, Notre Dame isn't looking outside the family, but it is looking outside the proverbial box. The school has zeroed in on Indianapolis attorney Jack Swarbrick as its choice to take over as athletic director, a source familiar with the process told the Tribune. While the hiring of Swarbrick might not be an entirely done deal, the announcement of a new AD is expected this week, heralding the end of a process that began with Kevin White's departure for Duke on June 1. Swarbrick, a 1980 Stanford law graduate and partner at the Indianapolis firm of Baker & Daniels LLP, has not been an athletic administrator at the collegiate level, though his name has been mentioned in connection with openings at Arizona State, Ohio State and Indiana in recent years. Swarbrick is, however, well-versed in administration within the athletic realm in general. He was a finalist for the NCAA president's position that went to Myles Brand in 2002.

I'm not sure if he's the right guy, but it looks like he's been working in the sports market for a long time. Best of luck Mr. Swarbrick, & GO IRISH!!!

Can there be an easier job in sports ?

July 15, 2008  09:02 AM ET

Swarbrick was a finalist in 2002 for the job of NCAA president. He was a key figure in the NCAA's move to Indianapolis in 2000, and he brokered the deal that makes Indianapolis a regular home to Final Fours.

Sounds liek he's crooked enough to run and big schools Athletic Department. But, can he make cheeseburgers fast enough for Charlie?

July 15, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Thanks for the c.v., Sexton, but I don't see college or AD experience. Why can't ND get a legitimate experienced atheletic director?

July 15, 2008  10:08 AM ET

I think this guy would be a good fit.

July 15, 2008  10:09 AM ET

It's reassuring to know that we'll have the Associate Editor of the USGF Gymnastics Safety Manual running one of the largest athletic departments in the country.

Always good to have people like FootballGuru insert their meaningless comments about Charlie's weight. Thanks for the insight, I hadn't noticed that he is overweight!

July 15, 2008  11:23 AM ET

So I guess they ran out of options, saw him in the back of a phone book called him, and figured, well he's about the only guy who can deal with all of Notre Dame's pushy alum.

Hiring an attorney is what I would a call a proactive move for this school of risky hires

Glad I could bring that to your attention. Apparently you need to adjust the aspect ratio on your TV or consider going to get glasses.

How the hell did you title yourself "Football Guru", what...did you get that off a box of donuts? Maybe you meant it to be "Fatball Guru" since that seems to be your focus. Hey, I know...go to the Kansas website since that's the kind of tremedous insight you have to college football. Get outta here!

Yawn... no one cares

July 15, 2008  02:47 PM ET

Anyone who works for the Sports Corp can get an AD job. They turned Indiana-No-Place into one of the best cities for sports. I think they made the right decision in getting someone outside of the organization and college football all together. He got the 2012 Super Bowl to a northern city. I'm sure he can do wonders with Notre Dame.

Blind optimism. I love it - but also hate it.

Substantive post.

A school that hasn't won a bowl game or doing anything substantial in 12 years is the lead story on Fannation. That pretty much sums up the entire day....

Yeah, your comment about the kid not taking his final exams on the USC thread was a significant contribution to society.
