All or nothing for Steelers suitor

Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller is not interested in any type of minority partnership with Steelers chairman Dan Rooney and is involved in negotiations to purchase the ownership shares of the four Rooney brothers with one purpose: To become majority owner of the Steelers and keep the National Football League franchise in Pittsburgh, ideally with Dan Rooney and his son, Art II, at the helm. According to a source who has intimate knowledge of the New York hedge fund manager's dealings with the Rooney brothers, Mr. Druckenmiller will not get caught up in a high-stakes bidding war to purchase the shares necessary to become majority owner if Goldman Sachs & Co., the Wall Street investment bank that is serving as financial adviser for the Rooney brothers, opens the process to public bid. If that happens, Mr. Druckenmiller will immediately withdraw his offer to the Rooney brothers to purchase each of the 16 percent shares they own in the Steelers franchise, the source said.

As long as the Rooneys remain at the helm, I am fine with whoever comes aboard. This team is sacred territory. As long as they stay firmly planted in Pittsburgh, that is the main concern. Long live the Steelers.

I'm so tired, I haven't slept a wink
I'm so tired, my mind is on the blink
I wonder should I get up and fix myself a drink
No, no, no

I'm so tired I don't know what to do
I'm so tired my mind is set on you
I wonder should I call you but I know what you'd do

You'd say I'm putting you on
But it's no joke, it's doing me harm
You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain
You know it's three weeks, I'm going insane
You know I'd give you everything I've got
For a little peace of mind

I'm so tired, I'm feeling so upset
Although I'm so tired I'll have another cigarette
And curse Sir Walter Raleigh
He was such a stupid get

You'd say I'm putting you on
But it's no joke, it's doing me harm
You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain
You know it's three weeks, I'm going insane
You know I'd give you everything I've got
For a little peace of mind
I'd give you everything I've got
For a little peace of mind
I'd give you everything I've got
For a little peace of mind

Hmmm, not a good situation.

July 16, 2008  08:54 AM ET

This could be a whole uglier for Pittsburgh you know.

You have a deep pockets billionaire, born and raised in Pittsburgh and who grew up a committed Steelers fan. So committed in fact that though his business has taken him to the NYC area to live, he flies "home" to Pittsburgh to watch the team. Further, he has stated publicly that he would be happy to sign an agreement to keep the team in Pittsburgh, a town he clearly cares for.

Above all of that, he has stated that he wants Dan Rooney and his son to remain at the helm of the franchise as managing partner.

I don't get the acid toward the guy from some Steeler fans. I think it would be hard to find this kind of guy to buy a team and you better grab him. He's a Pittsburgh guy from all reports.

What you better watch out for is the Wall Streeters that Dan Rooney is chasing in order to buy the team. You start shaving up the pie like he's going to do and that's when you get loads of guys with all kinds of ideas building coalitions and the next thing you know Steely McBeam is living in L.A.

Think about it.......

i hate to see the roonyes like this, they are one of the staple families of football. it would be a sad day in the NFL if they sale out and are not running the team.

July 16, 2008  09:26 AM ET

"This team is sacred territory...."

No, it's a business just like all the others. If it stops being profitable or if another city gives them a chance to make more money when their lease runs out, there outta there.

The owners want to talk about fan loyalty but that's a one-way street. If the Rooney's got an offer for much more than their shares are worth and with the knowledge that the team was moving to LA, well, adios. It's been a good ride. Those who live in Pittsburgh know that you've been in a population freefall so your long-term prospects don't look good. Even with a lease, there are clauses in those contracts that say game attendance must be maintained.

I'm not trying to a downer but those are the cold, hard facts.

Well slug, another "over the top" post...I am sure that you are sooo impressed with yourself...

July 16, 2008  10:04 AM ET

I think Druckenmiller is the best option known to date. Pittsburgh guy and a fan that wants to keep them here. What else could you want?

Small market or not, this city will ALWAYS support it's Stillers! This team ain't going nowhere slug,..beilieve that! There are other teams that don't have the fan base and attendance figures that can go and fail in LA.

That's what my wife said when I dropped an open gallon of paint on the floor...ouch...

July 16, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Druckenmiller is a good man. I hope he gets it.

July 16, 2008  12:08 PM ET

i would hope the nfl has the sense to block any attempt to move the steelers from pittsburgh. oh, wait, the nfl let the browns move. better find a local buyer.

July 16, 2008  12:11 PM ET

Cleveland had that old dump in Municipal stadium. They can't justify moving the Steelers when they have Heinz field and sell out all of their games.

July 16, 2008  12:24 PM ET

Stanley Druckenmiller seems like a very smart man. He certainly knows how to play hardball.

Why is this idiot, Bill O' Nerous putting songs on every thread...can't they kick morons like this off the site?

July 16, 2008  12:30 PM ET

I just hope the Steelers don't end up with an owner that wants the team move to L.A. The more time passes without a team in L.A., the more likely it becaome that some billionaire's going to step in and move a team.

July 16, 2008  12:31 PM ET

Just another example of how money talks and BS walks....would be a shame to see this team get into trouble by making a wrong move because of $$$$
