Chalmers to start for Heat?

Heat rookie Mario Chalmers, whom scouts raved about at the Orlando Summer League, believes he showed enough last week to put himself ''in the equation'' to compete for the starting point guard job. But coach Erik Spoelstra cautioned Monday, ''We don't want to put too much pressure on him early. What I really liked was he made other players better'' by penetrating and dishing. ``He made it look easy. He's a very unique talent.''

he should start

Who's his competition? Chris Quinn? I'd say he has a good chance to s tart if the season started today.

Well, young players often watch, learn from, and try to emulate the league's best players from recent years.
That's why so many players in the late 90's were deemed the "next Jordan".
If Chalmers likes to "penetrate and dish", he has probably been watching Steve Nash and Tony Parker (or maybe Chris Paul), who have popularized that style of play over the past couple years.
Of course, he's probably not yet ready for the starting role, but it's good to see that the rookies are learning from the stars that came before them.

I would start him, If the Heat are smart they would too because with Wade being well ineffective and the loss of Shaq, the Heat are going to need all the help they can get their hands on.

the heat just need a good defensive point guard

Chalmers, Banks, and Quinn are good enough. Now If we could trade say blount or Haslem for Camby then that would be great.

July 16, 2008  09:00 AM ET

And of course, the wolves didn't need him, no...

July 16, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Nooooooooooooo!!!! Your kidding right? Chalmers a starter in this league?

July 16, 2008  09:28 AM ET

I hope he does well...

Who?

July 16, 2008  10:02 AM ET

woow I suggested ths 2 weeks ago. Will be a tough learning curve, but I think they should go for it. It will be a tough learning year overall for Heat (similar to the one good run Wade had rookie year)

He is starting...on our Summer league team...

It makes sense to give him a chance. That's why the Heat won't do it. Instead they will try to bring in a knucklehead like Jamaal Tinsley.

July 16, 2008  11:46 AM ET

best indication that he'll be good.....the t-wolves traded him away. i think you could do a passable job as g.m. simply by studying what kevin mchale does and do the opposite. wolves don't want you? welcome aboard!

July 16, 2008  11:49 AM ET

The Heat definitely won the Chalmers trade. He was a steal and the Wolves traded him

Yeah, I'm glad to see teams like the Celtics and Spurs pass this kid up in the first rd. He was terrific at KU even before that final shot. The guy is a ball player and teams are going to be kicking themselves for not drafting him.

Especially Boston. Nice pick with Giddens.
