Oklahoma paper sues UT employee

The publisher of Oklahoma's largest newspaper and one of its sportswriters have sued a University of Texas employee who admitted posting a bogus article on the Internet about two University of Oklahoma football players. The Oklahoma Publishing Co., which publishes The Oklahoman newspaper and newsok.com Web site, filed a civil lawsuit Monday against James W. Conradt, a Nebraska football fan who works as a service manager for UT's information technology department. The 10-count civil lawsuit accuses Conradt of libel, copyright violations and trademark infringements. It seeks unspecified financial damages. Conradt, 36, used a template from the newspaper's Web site to publish a fake article on the Internet on July 9 that stated OU quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Landry Jones had been arrested for intent to distribute cocaine, the lawsuit alleges.

That was quick. I wonder if they will press criminal charges now, as Jone's father promised.

Good luck with that... they have yet to set the legal grounds on blogging and forums. I doubt this lawsuit will go far.

I think this guy should definately get in some kind of trouble for this. His intent might have been to pull a prank or get some laughs, but he (being in IT) should have known how the internet now can make even the littlest joke spiral out of control. He could have really done some damage to this kid's playing career. I mean don't lock him up, but make him cough up some dough.

Even though they have not yet set the legal grounds on blogging and forums, there are legal grounds for copyright infringement, libel, etc...which is what the lawsuit claims against the defendant. He wouldn't be in as much trouble if he hadn't used the newspaper's website template and attributed the article to one of the newspaper's writers. It doesn't matter if it was posted to a blog/forum or not. I know what the guy did was stupid and all, but I hope he is able to settle this without having to pay too much. I think his lesson has been learned.

Slander and Libel standards are too high for this to be sucessful. The copyright and trademark fight probably won't fly too far either. I'd love to see what teh rest of the 10-counts are.

Like I said when this story first came out... the guys lawyer will simply be able to use the 'reasonable person' argument. Any reasonable person knows that anything on Blog or Forum is NOT FACT. Blogs/forusm are not held to the same standards as Newspapers and News reports, those are considered recognized and responsible reporting agencies.

FootballGuru - It was not a blog or a Forum. He stole the Oklahoman Template and created a fake newspaper article and made it look real and legit!!!!. Its clearly spelled out. He probably wont get jail time, just pay a fine. I hope the kids father gets a piece of him too. This was definitely done out of spite! Sometimes, its hard to figure out stupid people!!

He should get fired.....to start. And I'm a full blooded Big Red fan.

Football Gury is correct: Blogs and websites are not held to the same scrutiny as newspapers. If the http address is www.blogsuchandsuch.com, and not the website of the newspaper, then the story on the site carries no weight.

As such, it's tough to argue that someone was damaged by the prank. I mean, now that the truth is told, did the persons in the article loose out on job opportunites or promotions? I doubt it. In order to get damages in court, you need to show you lost out on money or money opportunties. Unless it's punitive damages...

Stupid hillbillies! (Just kidding of course - Bill Calahan stinks.)

I mean, the guy is clearly in the wrong, and he's obviously not a classy NU fan.

There's a classy NU fan on Youtube complaining about Callahan, if you haven't seen. I forget the address, but search on Callahan and fan and Nebraska. She rants and rants through the whole KU game (where NU gave up 76 points) and claims she predicted the 76 point total. Hilarious.

July 17, 2008  12:26 PM ET

Oh. And what's an NU fan doing working for the Longhorns???

Same thing as Zack Taylor working at A&M, I guess?

And what does his NU affiliation have to do with his actions? If he's a Texas employee, is that a more factual association? Why bring up NU at all?

Lawrence Phillips! Lawrence Phillips! Lawrence Phillips! There, I said it.
