A U.S. report that unrestricted free agent Brendan Shanahan was offered and rejected a one-year, $2-million US offer from the Vancouver Canucks is inaccurate, according to his agent. "I can tell you that I've never been approached or had any discussions with Vancouver regarding Brendan," said Rick Curran, who added that San Jose and Montreal are not in the mix either. "We've only been having discussions with one team and that's the New York Rangers."

Come on Shanny one more year in NY. This "new" team needs you to get its chemistry together.

I heard Lamieux and Gretzky are going to be signing with Canucks!!

July 16, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Lemieux that is

Shanny wants to be a Ranger for one more season really bad.

But is he willing to accept a lesser role on the 3rd & 4th lines, PK, and shootouts? And accept being a healthy scratch more often, ESPECIALLY NEAR THE END OF THE SEASON?

July 16, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Shanahan is much, much too smart to even consider that move. Except for Sundin bucks.

July 16, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Bail out of a loser team and town. Come back to a winner,DETROIT.

July 16, 2008  10:55 AM ET

It is indeed pretty obvious he wants to finish as a Ranger. He can still do dome damage on the PP.

July 16, 2008  10:55 AM ET

I heard the 'Nucks are trying to coax Gino Odgic out of retirement, too, LGP!

July 16, 2008  10:55 AM ET

Should have been "do Some damage on the PP".

July 16, 2008  10:58 AM ET

DC, I read they're trying to redo the Bure, Courtnall, Linden, Ronning, Momesso, Lumme, Slegr and McLean in net.Their only chance at making the playoffs....

It's not about being smart in accepting more $ now. The Rangers take care of their classy players and Shanny can have a job with MSG the day he retires with room to move up.

The Rangers have little cap room left to spare and Shanny knows this. If he comes back, it won't be for much more than 1 million; prolly 2 million or something. He probably wants to know what his role is if he does come back. Unfortunately he is old and it's going to be a diminished one if the Rangers are to have him back. 3rd/4th line, 1st/2nd PP unit, PK, and shootouts.

Players like Prucha need a chance to develop also and it's not going to be on some Orr-Betts line. (Just made me remember I hope they re-sign Betts). Sorry for the rant.

And aside from taking a bagfull of shekels home what exactly would be his role in Hongcouver? He might jump up a line or two and get some "stats" but there would be little point.

Not when the other guys being signed are Demitra and Jason Krog....

July 16, 2008  11:40 AM ET

He'd do fine on a team that doesn't make the playoffs. I'm worried about him losing his legs in the playoffs. A la last season.

July 16, 2008  12:18 PM ET

But going to Hongcouver would be purely about the $$. No chance in hell of glory.

July 16, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Good match. Shanny's done anyway, and so are the Canucks. Misery loves company...

"We've only been having discussions with one team and that's the New York Rangers."

I believe he's going to stay a Ranger or retire. His kids are settling in and he doesn't want to mess up what they have going in NY.

The Rangers just re-signed Dawes so the chances or re-signing Shanny are fading.

Rumor Mill:

Montreal and the Rangers are the last two teams in the Sundin sweepstakes. All other teams have bowed out. I hope I'm wrong, but

GO MONTREAL!!!
