Ex-Senators goaltender Ray Emery said he does not have a drug problem and has taken steps to rehabilitate his flailing career as he spoke publicly for the first time since being bought out by the Senators last month. "No, I don't have a drug problem. I've heard that (rumor), yeah," Emery told TSN's Michael Landsberg on Off The Record yesterday. "People like to talk. People see you out and if you're associated with anyone that's seen as being like that, it snowballs."... Did Emery think the rumors hurt his chances of signing with another NHL team? "People can think what they want. I'm not really one who looks into that. I don't read newspapers. I don't go on blogs and all that stuff. It definitely can be hurtful to a career or family or anything," he said.

The first step in rehabilitation is to admit you have a problem Ray. Oh, and by the way, buy yourself an alarm clock.

I have a friend who has actually done drugs with Emery. Notice he doesn't categorically deny he has used drugs, he only denies having a drug problem.

Why not take a drug test to put the rumors to bed?

July 16, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Oh the horror!!!

Define drug problem.

To the average Chet it's almost any contact on a regular basis.

If he burns some rope daily to relax in the evening after practise is that a drug problem? But it would be OK to have a couple of beers?

Or is it that he has snorted the occasional line as well?

Neither is a drug problem to my eye.

If it's all he thinks about after waking up, if he's dashing off ice for a whiz break and stopping by his locker for a toot, or hitting bars on the road trying to score, then yes he has a problem.

Other than that he's a pretty normal rich young man.

Like we care!
He's one to Russia. I'm not gonna cry over him Good riddance!

July 16, 2008  11:02 AM ET

I disagree, PK! The first step in rehabilitation is to go play in Mother Russia! He won't have a drug problem when he comes back. He'll only have a vodka problem!

ALCOHOL IS A DRUG!

We're talking about the snorting, sniffing, inhaling kind with Emery. Not the sipping kind on ice with some fruit juice, OtherOne.

Hank got it right, for sure.

You know, I don't hang out with anyone that's "being like that", but if I did, I'm sure there would be plenty of temptation. Professional sports does not care if you have a "problem", just like many other jobs. Try failing a drug test at your job and see what happens to your career.

And I'm not saying he doesn't have a problem either, only trying to add some balance to the witch hunt.

Bob Probert had a problem. He even got caught smuggling coke across the Canuckistan-US border. John Kordic too had his issues and they killed him.

But I'm willing to give Emery the benefit of the doubt.
