Rockies shopping Holliday for Beltran?
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that Colorado general manager Dan O'Dowd is said by other GMs to be quietly asking around about potential trades for Matt Holliday, an All-Star and one of baseball's best hitters. It is believed that a first attempt with the Mets went nowhere when Rockies people were told that center fielder Carlos Beltran was off limits. A trade that would have sent Holliday, center fielder Willy Taveras and perhaps others to New York for Beltran and star outfield prospect Fernando Martinez appeared to have been floated.

Yeah I don't know. I love Carlos and his defense is irreplaceable but if the trade was Holliday for Beltran straight up I'd probably do it. The addition of FMart would be a deal breaker. They are going to need someone to play center and he could be it and having Holliday in left field would be a god send. Him and Church at the corners with FMart in center..it would be even better if Beltran was in the middle and they took Fmart instead..wishful thinking.

We'd like to trade Glaus and Izturis for Rodriguez and Jeter. What do say Yanks?

Agreed, the suggested trade would be stupid. Martinez should be the anti-Kazmir; he's off-limits.
Beltran, on the other hand, I could see doing well back in a smaller market. I have a feeling he never forgave Mets fans for booing him relentlessly a couple of seasons ago. (Remember when Julio Franco had to push Beltran to give a curtain call?). Then, you look at his home production versus his road production and the discrepancy is striking.
A deal sending Beltran to CO minus Martinez would be gold, though. Chavez is more than capable of roaming CF until Martinez is ready to inherit it.

That kind of a trade wouldn't even make sense. If O'dowd trades Holliday, he better land a star pitcher. And I don't mean a star A ball prospect. Somebody that could help immediately. Also, we already have a AA center-fielder-of-the-future in Dexter Fowler. Taveras can be traded in the offseason after Fowler begins his big-league career in September. Dan O'dowd knows nothing about building a baseball team. The Rockies have a surplus of outfielders, so trade for some more rather than trade for something the team needs. FIRE O'DOWD!

Martinez is the Mets best prospect. It used to be that teams only tried to fleece the Yankees...then along came Omar.

i swear if the mets do this i might lose it with them. If you look at Holliday at Coors field and compare him away from Coors field it isn't even close. Martinez is their best prospect and Beltran is still young and the best defensive centerfielder in the league. Some people believe Martinez will be better then Holliday i sure hope so this would be a stupid **** trade.

Beltran has always been tremendously overrated ever since he left Houston. He NEVER lived up to the hype. Keep Holliday.

Well I agree I don't know if I would pull the trigger on this one. If the Mets get Holliday and give up Beltran. They didn't accomplish much. We need a left fielder. But if your centerfielder is taken away to get the left fielder, now you need a centerfielder. However I am totally for getting Holliday it will take a lot. Are the Mets that desperate to give up their top prospect? I DON't know!

I would trade Beltran, but I would never move Martinez. Beltran needs to go back to a smaller market. He can't handle NYC.

Wow. All the Rockies wanted were the Mets top prospect and their gold glove/silver slugger CF and clean up hitter for a guy that hits 70-100 points higher at Coors than on the road? Are you sure they didn't ask for 5 luxury boxes at Citi Field and the Empire State Building as well.
Don't get overwhelmed by Holliday's overall numbers. From 2004-2007, he hit over .300 on the road once (.301 last year) and is always, INCLUDING THIS YEAR, at least 70 points higher at home. Whole lotta good that will do the Shea faithful. But at least they offered to throw in Taveras. Yeah. I don't think so.

Gets By Buckner:
You're right. Beltran is hitting 30 points higher at Shea with 1 more HR and 15 more RBIs in 30 fewer ABs. I agree that those numbers are striking, but perhaps not the way you intended it.
Not that you are doing this, Buck, but it cracks me up how people expected Beltran to be the guy he was for Houston in the playoffs. Did any of you really expect him to hit .430 with 8 HR per 46 ABs as a Met? You remember, of course, that in the regular season for Houston he hit .258 with 23 HR in over 300 ABs, right? No? Didn't think so. I wouldn't trade Beltran for Holliday right now straight up.
