Phillies looking at Blanton

The Phillies optioned starter Brett Myers to triple-A Lehigh Valley last month after he went 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA in 17 starts. He has made two starts for the IronPigs and one start for double-A Reading as the Phillies try to turn around Myers' season and upgrade a rotation that needs a boost. A source said the Phillies were taking a look at Oakland righthander Joe Blanton, who is 5-12 with a 4.96 ERA in 20 starts after he went 42-34 with a 4.09 ERA in his previous three seasons with the A's.

i knew they wouldnt trade for a top notch player, they always go for the cheap player, we will never win with the front office the phils have, they are stupid , we need starting good pitching to win, and yer they turn the blind eye,

Hi, I'm 5-12 with a near 5 ERA. Isn't Myers' record about the same? And Eaton too? **** I hate this team. Always a bridesmaid....

I'm no Philly fan, by any means, but this would be a bad pickup. Granted, Blanton has traditionally been a much better pitcher before this season, but moving him and his astronomical ERA to Citizens Bank is just asking for trouble.

(As a Mets fan, however, I would love to see this trade happen!)

"Blanton has traditionally been a much better pitcher before this season"

You'd think the idea behind a Philly mid-season trade would be to improve THIS season.

CardsFan2.... exactly right.

Blanton needs to go to a big park. He's very average. He would get lit up in Philly.

there is no quick fix out there anymore.....anyone else left burnett, bedard and so on would be too high of a price to pay...if they can get blanton for cheap and dont lose any top prospects then its worth a shot.....but if the A's want a carasoco or a marson, they should just call back myers and carasco or even happ and take their chances, and maybe go after sabathia as a free agent in the off season

I am puzzled why the Phils just don't go with some people out of the farm system instead of working some idiotic trade. I would think after seeing JA Happ a few times pitch some pretty decent ball they wouldn't just try to keep him. You also have Carrasco at Double-A who just featured at the Rising Stars game, so why not leave Myers to figure out what's wrong (or move him into the bullpin, and set Gordon out to pasture), and just see where it goes. It worked out pretty well with Kendrick last year.

No way they should give up Marson if they say he is going to be as good as people hope. Ruiz is a bum.

Since BB got almost nothing except one good prospect (Murton is no better than AAAA player) for Harden and Gaudin, I'm thinking the Phils think they can get Blanton without giving up even a decent player, probably only a 10-15th level prospect from their system. Blanton has been very good in August and September, so maybe the Phils can catch lightening here. Certainly the A's won't get any player that could actually improve their team for Blanton.-

How 'bout Blanton for Eaton? You know, your trash for our trash................sheesh! What's this I hear people are interested in Sweaty Freddie Garcia?!?!? The Phillies no less?!?!?!? Is he going to play for the money he stole with his last signing with us?
