Yao to play Olympic warmup
Chinese newspapers say Yao Ming is likely to resume working out with China's national basketball team later this week. The Houston Rockets' center has a "very high" chance of playing in China's three games at the Stankovic Cup Olympic warmup tournament in the eastern city of Hangzhou, Hu Jiashi, deputy director of the Chinese Basketball Association was quoted as saying by newspapers. China's first game is against Serbia on Thursday.

How can he be your favorite NBA player when NBA is secondary to him? He is a nice guy but he is controlled by the communiist China.
Anyways it's obvious that he will play in the Olympics. That is not news. Be very surprise if he doesn't.

His last 3 seasons in the league has been injury after injury......
hasn't played a full season since 2004
How stupid a decision is this ?
I'm not saying it will cost him his NBA career....but what if his large foot
starts to act up again mid NBA season ? It will be attributed to playing this summer......
NBA should have a rule that if you miss more than 8-10 games with an injury during the year....you shold not be allowed to play in ANY international competitioin during the summer....

Even if Yao were crippled, they would find a way for him to suit up and get some playing time. He's an athletic ambassador for China, and there's no way they would pass up on him participating in Olympic basketball.
Because it's hosted in Beijing, it's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to showcase him, and as long as he has a pulse, he will be out there.

Nice. The Rockets pay him millions of dollars, yet he's going to risk injury to compete in the Olympics.

If I were the Rockets I'd be pretty pissed right now. The guy's coming off a season ending injury and has been injured every year and all of a sudden he's good to play in the olympics? He should be training and preparing to play at least one season injury free.

The Rockets are in the bad end of this deal. Even if Yao is still injured he would still play in the Olympics. The Rockets actually had a chance to get out of the first round and Yao was playing really good. It's funny how all of a sudden he had an injury and decides to rest to get ready for the Olympics. That effort that he is giving to the Chinese team should be the same effort that he should give to the Rockets. Yao is getting a lot from the NBA but he is not giving his 110% to the Rockets.

Yao is in an American territory and making his living in the U.S. and yet the Chinese government has the final say in what he can and cannot do. The Rockets have no control over him.

If the Olympics weren't in Beijing, Yao would be recovering from his injury. With that said, it's clear that the Chinese expect Yao to put on a show and hopefully medal. It may not happen but there is a lot of expectation on that man's shoulder.
By the way: Guys in a communist system you are the property of the State. It's State funded, State owned. Yao is no exception.

This T&R article is complete garbage. The Chinese media make stuff up all the time.
He WILL NOT play in the warm-up games. Period.
No one wants to risk him getting injured in a WARM-UP game. Not the NBA, not the Rockets, not the Chinese team, and not the Chinese government.
Obviously the Chinese want him to play in the actual Olympics. He's an icon there.
But he'll skip the warm-up games and concentrate on his health.

HOVA is right on here. Yao will play whether he's ready or not. Yao is essentially on loan to the Rockets from China.
