Colt: Manning will be ready

Whether Peyton Manning steps on the field for any of the Indianapolis Colts' five preseason games is open for debate, but the team is confident its eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback will be ready when it matters most -- the Sept. 7 regular-season opener in Lucas Oil Stadium against the Bears. "That's our expectation," team president Bill Polian said. The status of Manning, whose 160 consecutive regular-season starts are the most in the NFL by an active quarterback, became an issue when he underwent surgery Monday afternoon to remove an infected bursa sac in his left knee. The procedure was performed in Indianapolis by Dr. Tom Klootwyk, one of the Colts' orthopedic surgeons.

Even if he doesn't make it back in time for the Bears, that's like a sixth preseason game anyhow.

this guy played with his broken jaw wired shut. he'll be fine.

July 17, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Dont worry, he'll be happy

July 17, 2008  08:22 AM ET

He'll play no doubt. The bears will have a losing record because if you have no offense you can win with just Hester and an old Defense

July 17, 2008  08:22 AM ET

*can't

July 17, 2008  08:24 AM ET

He will be back for the opener if he has to crawl onto the field.

July 17, 2008  08:50 AM ET

No one with any sense thought he'd miss a game, anyway.

July 17, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Obviously he will play. The season is 8 weeks away. He is out for 4-6 weeks. Simple math. Sadly, most "experts" don't have the mental capacity to do 8 minus 6.

Manning has had this surgery before in college, and he was back in a month. This is not a big deal.

No he won't be ready!!!!!!!

Umm....how is their defense old? The oldest starter is Ogunleye and he will turn 31 next month. Urlacher and Mike Brown just turned 30 earlier this year. Every other starter is 28 and younger. Hell, all of the backup players are under 30.

I agree their offense is slow but they aren't that far off. They have a good o-line and promising young talent at RB, TE, and OL. The WRs they have are serviceable and could be pretty decent if they had a consistent QB. QB is really the only glaring need on that whole team.

No, I'm not a Bears fan.

July 17, 2008  01:37 PM ET

He'll use that game to get his game rythem back in that Bears game. He won't push the issue much though.

Who's Colt? The Redskins rookie QB? What does he have to do with this? :)

Standard NFL team press release = He'll be fine.

The fact is, we don't actually know. And we'll have no real idea until at least 3 weeks from now as to how he is progressing.

If the Colts are smart - if there is even the slightest doubt concerning Manning's knee when the season starts - i hold him out for a game or two. Better to have miss a early game then reinjure the knee and possibly miss a lot more time !!!
