Phillies eye Giants pitcher

The latest has the Phils hoping San Francisco, an NL West pretender, will shop 23-year-old right-hander Matt Cain. Word is the Giants might part with Cain, who is 5-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 20 starts, if offered an intriguing package of young talent. Meantime, a Phillies source shot down continued rumors that they're hot for Toronto righty A.J. Burnett. The Phils apparently do have interest in acquiring lefty reliever John Grabow from Pittsburgh, which isn't asking for much in return.

Not asking much for Grabow? He might be worth a look by the Cards. We still need lefty relief.

I'd take them both if the price is right. I'd love to see Demaso Marte in red pinstripes as well.

Man, the Phillies need pitching badly. Adam Eaton, if he were a horse, would have been euthanized by now. After Hamels, they suck. I'm not a Phillies fan, but if they want to hang in the East, they need to make a move.

I'd run harder for Matt Cain than for Bedard or Burnett.

Cain is doing a lot better than Adam Eaton as of late, but the Giants better not be asking for much in exchange. I just hope I don't have to hear the name Greg Golson (AA prospect) involved in trade talks for the rest of this season. Right now he's worth too much to give away in a deal like this.

Whatever happened to Kris Benson?

Right now he's pitching in AAA. He hasn't been pitching up to par, so the Phillies havn't called him back up. It's not as bad as it sounds, from a financial standpoint, because he wasn't signed to a major league level contract.

"He's Oliver Perez without the head trauma"

That's a good point, but Matt Cain has always said to have the higher ceiling. Eh, who the hell knows anymore?

I guess I left myself open for that one. It's ok, I can take a little razzing, even from NAMBLA members like truth and the clown. Carry on you lovers!

I like Matt Cain, I think he's solid and has been hurt by bad run support in SF.

July 17, 2008  10:12 AM ET

What happened to the Burnett to Philly deal that seemed so imminent a week or so ago?

July 17, 2008  10:22 AM ET

If I ran the Giants, there is no way I'm trading Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez or Tim Lincecum.
