08:00 AM ET 07.17 | The long and drawn-out negotiations between Toronto FC and the Chicago Fire for the rights to Brian McBride have reached a stalemate, and MLS is ready to step into the fray if it has to. MLS commissioner Don Garber admitted on Wednesday that if the Fire and Toronto can't come to anagreement on a deal that MLS will step in to help broker a deal. Just what sort of deal remains to be seen. "The league, at some point, has to determine whether we get involved," Garber said of the McBride allocation situation.

I think I blogged about this a few weeks ago. I am surprised it has taken MLS this long to step in.

keeper: TFC is giving one story, the Fire are giving another...

they've asked for (report) the likes of Barrett, Conde, Rolfe or Mapp.... now if it were barrett or Conde im sure the Fire wouldve gladly traded for either.... both?? i dunno, i mean Conde is as good as gone by Jan, and Barrett hasnt been the most consistant forward in the MLS, but he is/was leading the Fire in goals....

Mapp and Rolfe are off limits.... they are franchise players, young and talented... i would be THOROUGHLY shocked if they get lumped into it...

TFC claims they only asked for player X OR player Y..... while the fire are saying they are asking for player X, player Y, and player Z..... One side says only 1 player, the other is saying mulltiple players.... Im sure the 1 player they asked for was either mapp or rolfe, and as the fire arent willing to deal them out, TFC probably asked for at least 2 instead.....

my guess??? Conde, Barrett, or Marmol...... either $$ or allocation $$$... and an early d.pick or a couple mid-round d.picks

yep, TFC is hijacking the deal. They want two players plus for Mcgod that may play 2 years? Cmon TFC, le the man play for his home crowd.

He sucks anyways let him go to whoever wants him!

July 17, 2008  11:10 AM ET

He sucks? Huh? Apparently you didn't watch the 2002WC, or his last number of years at Fulham. Many folks English futbol fans consider him "one of the good Americans." Talk to any manager he's played for, and they'll tell you that McBride is one of the best "in the air" forwards in the game.

July 17, 2008  11:32 AM ET

kenny.... whats your favorite team??

July 17, 2008  11:34 AM ET

i wouldnt mind giving up both Barrett and Conde.... as i said before Conde is as good as gone this Jan. anyhow..... Barrett is so inconsistant that the Fire would need to replace him before too long unless he pulls through...

now, i cant completely blame Barrett for his play so far... simply put, he's not a target forward... when he has Rolfe to work off of, he's far more productive....

July 17, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Maybe not just "one of"... but perhaps the best header in the game today. Accurate and hard from a jump or a dive... and he has a pretty high strike rate for the team he was on in the EPL, a team among the worst non-relegated teams every year in arguably the best league in the world.

July 17, 2008  12:12 PM ET

why should Toronto give in?...he's their property, they dont make the rules.....oh, so MLS will just change the rules......forgot.....shocking....Toronto should trade his rights to another team and let that other team deal with Chicago and "Big Brother" MLS

July 17, 2008  12:35 PM ET

Which ever team gets McBride will be getting one of the Premier Amercian players. If your toronto keep him or get one of chicago's better young player, and if your chicago give up some of your better young players.

July 17, 2008  01:33 PM ET

no doubt....i would love McBride in the Toronto line-up....if it wasnt for our plastic pitch......maybe...just maybe

July 17, 2008  01:34 PM ET

This type of situation is exactly why the MLS needs to change their rules for good. How are you supposed to look like anything but some second tier league when a team isn't even allowed to sign a guy that wants to come play for them? In any other league in the world McBride would already be playing with the Fire. Not only this story but how about NYRB not getting all the money for Jozy and being allowed to spend it however they see fit. I like that the MLS is making strides and coming along a little bit in terms of the players it's producing and the overall quality of play on the field. I'd also like to root for the league in general but this kind of thing frustrates me so much and really makes me think that all of those people out there that hate on the MLS and call it a joke may just be right.

He's a legend let him go where he wasnt

I rather him play in a big market with Blanco, that would be exciting especially when they play the galaxy

July 17, 2008  01:45 PM ET

Coisty1966- noone is saying TFC needs to **** and give it up for nothing, we are simply stating that asking for Mapp and/or Rolfe is not going to happen....

getting 1 Player, $$ and early d.picks is not a bad offer, and ive been saying that for some time......

Barrett, Conde, Marmol, Robinson are all options, mapp and Rolfe are not...

hell id go for a Barrett and Conde offer... then you could trade Conde to LA or NYRB....

and even if you had quality grass BMB wouldnt be signing with TFC.... he's stated its Fire or Retire...

Its disgusting the way Mo Johnston is handling this. That guy is all snake oil. Everything he says makes me think "slimeball". I think a lot of players see this and this is the reason TFC has had so many top-class players head elswhere in MLS. Mo needs to recognize that McBride wants to play for his hometwn team and set his ego aside to let a legend go to his rightful home. Its better for everybody this way. The only player Chicago should have to give up is Barrett, who would be replaced.

...says the guy with the username "GoFire!", hahaha.

I like the Chicago fans that keep saying "we shouldn't be expected to give up Rolfe or Mapp, because they are good, young players!" So, what should you be expected to give up for a world-class, returning Premier league striker?

Chicago is a division rival to TFC, and they aren't going to strengthen a team like Chicago, without getting some considerable extra strength of their own.

If MLS steps in, I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Rolfe or Mapp going to Toronto.

Shakes, I suggest sending our top goalscorer and you act like your entitled to another one of our good young players? Wake up, man. a) McBride doesn't want to play for you and b) your stuck with nothing after this year. The ball is certainly in our court considering.

GoFire, your ignorance is the reason why MLS has little credibility with intelligent football fans. If McBride wants to play in Chicago so bad and playing infront of 20000 passionate fans at BMO is such a death sentance, then why doesn't he lower his demands? It's not just McBride, Chicago needs a designate player slot (unless they turn around and ditch Blanco). Why should TFC give up McBride AND the DP slot without getting fair value? If McBride would come back on the cheap, this probably would have been done by now.
