Why Yankees won't sign Bonds

A rumor was prominent yesterday that the Yankees were pursuing Barry Bonds. But reality was different. The Yanks are not after Bonds or currently stalking any high- profile position player on the trade market. As for Bonds, Brian Cashman said, "We have had no discussions regarding Barry Bonds." The Yankee GM did not want to comment further on the controversial home-run king. But multiple Yankee officials said they would not pursue Bonds because: 1.) He has not played since last season and, at age 44, they did not know what shape he is in, how long it would take him to get ready (if he could get ready) and how long his body would endure regular play even as a DH. 2.) They did not want to be involved with an unpopular, disgraced, potentially disruptive player currently under federal indictment.

...but if they need a pitcher, they'll sign Clemens.

Anyone want this Milk Dud?

All these teams not signing Bonds are stupid. Anyone with a .400 plus OBP belongs in the Major Leagues. I wish the Red Sox had a place for him, however they do not.

If the baseball gods had any sense of justice he would end up in either Seattle or Kansas City. Two teams that are going NO WHERE fast.

Reason 18 Yanks signed Sexson. Reason 19 the secret collusion agreement to keep Bonds out of baseball. I love Collusion.

July 18, 2008  07:10 AM ET

nobody will sign bonds because of steroids. that's what it comes down to. oh, and he is a crap locker room presence.

July 18, 2008  07:11 AM ET

The Yankees need all the help they can get, they are not in a position to choose where that help comes from! Bring back George! Hank, go back to your play pen!

July 18, 2008  07:25 AM ET

I don't see anybody signing Clemons......I think Yoda wants to sign Clemons.

July 18, 2008  07:30 AM ET

Man for real....Bonds does not need to play the Selig Steroids game of MLB anymore. Hs saved his money. You think the league was cleaned of dope when he was not on a team? NO. Players gamble, they do drugs, some **** and probably more then you would think. Yankees.....they are just screwed-up...and they should be playing better, but things in life sometimes and most of the time - do not go the way that you want them to, so you have to plan for - your future. Bonds is no idiot, he saved while the other steroid players (most MLB ballplayers) spent their money and many are poor for doing it. People should be real about this presence BS.....you want to win or you want to lose?

July 18, 2008  07:51 AM ET

Bond 007.... nice rambling post.... was this a congratultions to Bonds for cheating and raking in millions? Or just a general defense of him cheating because "everyone else was doing it"? It won't bother me if he plays again, just like it won't bother me if Rose finally makes the HOF, but you can't defend what either one did.....

July 18, 2008  07:59 AM ET

Bonds is a loser & who would want all his drama in their locker room ...?

July 18, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Well, that's an easy one, I don't even need to read the article! They obviously won't sign him because he does steroids! Oh wait, that can't be it ... maybe I'll read the article.

Barry all you need do is admit that you used PED's and apologize for doing it and the Steinkees will sign you in a heart beat. You would then fit in with the other cheats on that team.
