Free tickets for Leafs game

Check the sky for two moons. Or flying pigs. Perhaps H-E-two sticks really has frozen over. The Toronto Maple Leafs -- one of the NHL's costliest ticket vendors -- will host a free pre-season game Sept. 22 against the Buffalo Sabres for 20,000 people lucky enough to get ducats from the hockey club and sponsor Coca-Cola. Yes, free Leaf hockey. At a cost of close to $2 million to stage. Famously tight-fisted owner Harold Ballard should be whirling in his grave right about now.

Wow! The fans get to see two non-playoff teams square off in a meaningless preseason game. These tickets are worth exactly what the fans paid for them. I'll be people will be selling the tickets to sucker Leaf fans on e-bay or Stub Hub for $50.

It still is interesting to see a team that squeezes every last penny from its fans handing out a freebie, no matter when or where the game is played. It shows how pathetic their situation really is, and how low the team is expected to finish this season. In years past, ownership was never willing to accept losing revenue to appease fans, no matter how bad the club performed. The backlash toward Peddie and his evil minions must have gotten through somehow.

These tickets are merely an opportunity to see glorified jr. A hockey as Leaf retreads will be showcased. So, if you would like to see the grace and style of Ben Ondrus, Jeremy Williams and Jay Harrison.... happy viewing.

But if dad wants to take his son to a real game be ready to fork out about $350 by the time you scare up two tickets, park etc.

July 18, 2008  08:45 AM ET

They are almost as desperate as the Hawks were a couple of years ago! During Bill Wirtz' last year as owner, they couldn't even give the tickets away for free! Nobody wanted them!

Fortunately for the Leafs inept management, Torontonians are hockey crazy and, like sheep, will dutifully line up and shell out big bucks to see their team ... ahem ... play hockey!

im a leafs fan, but i know toronto is just trying to get fans

July 18, 2008  10:27 AM ET

considering two sips of soda will be $14 at the concession stands, it's not so nice from the owners....

Why the hell is Sundin pictured here....

TOleafsbosoxcolts: Give your head a shake, the Leafs don't need to try to get fans. We flock to them no matter what. We eat, live and breathe Maple Leaf hockey in Toronto. I am sorry, but the one NHL team that doesn't need to bring in more fans, is the Toronto Maple Leafs.

July 18, 2008  11:25 AM ET

CMH_PHX; I had this arguement with my dad last night, I was of the opinion you are. However, he broke it down pretty simply, they don't need to give away the tickets.

How much will the food be? $20/beverage? $8/hot dog?

July 18, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Wow, free tickets to a preseason game. Excuse me, but does anyone really care? Another glorified "generosity" by rich owners. Don't p*ss on my head and tell me it's raining.

July 18, 2008  12:58 PM ET

Jeez, you lot can find just about anything to moan about, can't you?!?

First of all, if you don't like the concession prices, eat before the game! If you don't like the price to park right downtown, take transit.

Second of all, I bet you there's a full building of people who really do care come game night and ideally more of them will be kids than at a normal Leaf game (which, I'm assuming is really management's point). There are thousands of people who can't get access to tickets and tens of thousands who couldn't afford it even if they could find them.

So yeah, it's a meaningless exhibition game but it's a gesture all the same and one the club didn't have to extend.

Why the hell is Sundin pictured here....
cmh_phx | 07/18/08, 10:28 AM

Because ..... he is Mr. Maple Leaf (even after Vancouver signs him to $15 mil per season)! He's a microcosm of what the franchise is all about. Loaded with money but don't give a ****!

I am sorry, but the one NHL team that doesn't need to bring in more fans, is the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Spo | 07/18/08, 11:24 AM

Well said Spo! The only thing the long suffering Maple Leafs fans need is a better product on the ice and they'll go ballistic! You'll see them bungee jumping from the CN tower! They'll tear the city apart!

Big Ben.....get a damn grip on yourself. You've been a member for little over a year and have only 78 comments. Which tells me you really aren't involved in a lot of what is going on in here.

If you would bother to READ (or actually be more than a very casual participant) you would recognize the majority of the names in here and know where we are coming from. Hockey isn't in season. The articles here are ridiculous due to free agency being over so those of us who KNOW each other are in here cracking jokes and just seeing who can come up with something fun. Other than 1 poster on this article I have talked to in posts. Do you see anyone else trashing anyone for the JOKES, Einstein?

But, no, Mr. Righteous comes in for a peak and starts trashing people. Do you think we actually GIVE A DAMN about concession prices and parking prices for a FREE game? Go back and hibernate and let's see how many months it takes you to get to comment #79. Until then.....try reading who HAS been saying what and for HOW LONG before you decide to show up and pass judgement.

Hahahahahahahaha !

July 18, 2008  07:53 PM ET

TR - I don't think I've ever seen you quite so ticked off!!!

July 19, 2008  12:30 AM ET
