Gossage: Joba belongs in bullpen
Goose Gossage knows about the bullpen and about the Hall of Fame. So listen to what he had to say yesterday. Gossage believes the Yankees need to put Joba Chamberlain back in the pen and that George Steinbrenner should someday join him in Cooperstown. "I think he's more valuable, personally, in the bullpen, to utilize him two or three or four days out of the week is more valuable to a ballclub than starting him," Gossage said of Chamberlain. If Joba goes back, who starts in his place? "The way starters are used today, now it's getting closer to five innings to being a quality start," Gossage said. "I think they can get most anybody to be a starter today. With the emphasis on those set-up guys, they've really been instrumental. Now you don't win a world championship without a great, great bullpen. So I think he was more valuable in the bullpen."

He is probably right, I don't care, I hope he blows his arm out. Mainly, I just want to see this team home in October. And with the big addition of Sexson, I think I may be getting my wish.

Gossage said. "I think they can get most anybody to be a starter today."
Tell that to Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Daryl Rasner, et al.
Here's a case of a relief pitcher over-valuing the role of relief pitchers. Shocking.

What good does a good bullpen do you when you get blown out before the 5th inning! Dumb statement!

There's a lot of that up early thing going on apparently......
The Joba starting things will look like a good idea until he breaks down late in the season.....

Surprise - Goose Gossage is bullpen centric.

CardsFan, exactly. This isn't news. This is a reliever promoting the importance of relief pitching.
It's the same circular argument we've had a thousand times re: Joba. If you have a great start, you don't need the bullpen so badly. And if you have a great bullpen, you don't rely as much on your starters. The only problem with Joba--or anyone--is that they can't do both.
I'd have to say, "Duh".

I think the jury is out..... with the Braves, Smoltz was moved back and forth..... with him, we got either 40 saves or 15 wins (which could have been more except for some blown saves)..... which is more important? The Yankees already have their closer.... but when Mariano retires??? That ninth inning spot is pretty damned important..... The Yankee fans are pretty spoiled not having to worry about it for the last 10 years....

Joba is a proven 8th inning stud, and as I've said a billion times before, the perfect heir to Mo's throne. Goose is right. He may be "bullpen-centric," but that means he knows rare bullpen-quality stuff when he sees it, and his opinion has an HOF stamp on it. Plus, he agrees with me, which makes him very smart.

Actually, you can win without great starters. The Reds did it in 1990, since they had one of the best bullpens of all time (Randy Myers, Norm Charlton, Rob Dibble).
They had some decent starters, but not that great. Tom Browning was decent, Jose Rijo was good, but beyond that? If I recall correctly, they were even trying to use Rick Mahler to fill out the rotation, since Jack Armstrong had gotten hurt early on.

The User...if we have to go back 18 years to find a team that won the WS without great starting pitching...what does that tell you?
Jim Abbott pitched with one arm, but that doesn't make it a winning strategy.

Pardon me, idiots, but...
Joba has now started eight games and his ERA is 2.62.
Do your homework BEFORE you come to class next time, huh?
