Pirates seek fair market value

One popular notion making the Major League Baseball rounds in the past week is that the Pirates are overvaluing their trade pieces to the extent they might not make a deal. The New York Post quoted a baseball executive as calling the Pirates' asking price as "exorbitant." But one team official was adamant in describing the Pirates' requests as "reasonable," particularly when considering that the primary pieces on the block -- outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte -- probably are the best available at their respective positions on the market. Calls also continue to come on outfielder Jason Bay, though he is not being shopped, and his value would be even greater than Nady or Marte. The Pirates are known to be seeking two quality prospects in any Nady or Marte deal, with a leaning toward pitching. The price for Bay would be higher.

Oh my, they might actually hold out for value? It must be a new day in Pittsburgh. After GIVING Aramis Ramirez away for what amounted to ZERO. Maybe this means that the Bucs might be competitive by 2010?

Why shouldn't the Pirates asking price be exorbitant? They've got something that everyone wants.
There's no law that ssys the Pirates must give away all of their talent for nothing......it just seems like there is.

You're asking too much if you can't sell it.

i think the pirates should stand pat until the end of august or early september, increasing the value of players they are willing / able to move, try to make a .500 or better finish this year thereby giving their fans something to lean on, and not settle for less than players who can shore up their farm system with an eye to 2010.

by the end of the season, contenders will be drooling for a good lefty reliever, or a corner outfielder with power.

Headline Correction:

"Every team seeks fair trade market value"

July 18, 2008  09:01 AM ET

These players are worth what the market will bear....How badly do you want them?

July 18, 2008  09:27 AM ET

In a buyers market, the seller has all the power. Look what the Pens gave up to "rent" Hossa for the playoffs. It's no different in baseball, particularly if they are, as quoted above, the best available at their positions out there. Stick to your guns Neal and get the best deal possible. The days of the Buccos being a farm team for the "haves" of the league shold be over.

July 18, 2008  09:41 AM ET

It really comes down to how much Pittsburgh wants to move them. If they are okay with holding onto them, then they should keep them if they don't get the price they want. Otherwise, they need to trade them for what the market bears.

July 18, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Best available? That is like Borast linguinese for overpriced but we got the market by the ballz.

July 18, 2008  10:23 AM ET

We will be below .500 with or without these guys on our team. Hold out for the best offer, get REAL prospects and build this team the right way.

I hope the executive that called the price "exorbitant" wasn't with the Cubs. He still owes us a real player in the Aramis Ramirez deal.

July 18, 2008  11:06 AM ET

you are the pirates......arguably the WORST franchise in either leagu now and over the last decade......

there is no such thing as 'fair market value'
all but 2 or 3 of your players are either AVERAGE or below average
THAT'S WHY YOU ARE THE PIRATES

July 18, 2008  11:21 AM ET

Maybe the Pirates are trying to do this right for a change.

July 18, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Wow jgb, such insight. The point is that they are trying to change all of the BS that has been going on for the last 15 years...finally. Weren't the Celtics a crappy team for the last few years? They're champs now. These things happens in sports. The point is, thay cannot allow themselves to be repeatedly raped by the other teams in the league anymore.

LetGoPens....ignore him. He was either beat up all the time by the jocks when he was in school or wanted to be one of them and was hung up by his tightie whities.

July 18, 2008  11:58 AM ET

The downside is that their asking price may be too much so they would get "stuck" with guys who want to leave and play for a winner. Get what you can for them!

July 18, 2008  12:16 PM ET

I think he's still hanging by those tightie whities Trocks.

Says a person that likes to "give it away"

Quoting from the PPG Beat writer blog -

On a not-really-related note, revisiting the issue of the Pirates' "exorbitant" demands for their players, there appears to be a pattern in place where these reports -- as well as many of their predecessors -- emanate from New York. To fully understand why, one has to appreciate the general view there that a) New York teams are owed everything when it comes to sporting glory and b) it is the responsibility of the Pittsburghs of the world to help facilitate that. Thus, when Pittsburgh plays hard-to-get, it is treated by some who run or work for those teams with surprise, disappointment and, ultimately, anger vented through the press.
"They won't take Aaron Heilman and four other players we don't want for Bay? Who do they think they are?"
Had a good talk last night with someone infinitely more experienced in this business than I am, and he described in vivid detail many examples of that over the years.
