Mavs pass on Artest trade

The Sacramento Kings have expressed interest in acquiring Dallas Mavericks forward/guard Josh Howard in a trade for All-Star forward Ron Artest, but the Mavericks aren't interested, according to an NBA source. The Mavericks reportedly were willing to offer forward Brandon Bass and guard Jerry Stackhouse for Artest. But the Kings wanted Howard included in the deal, halting the discussions. Because the Mavericks won't budge on Howard, a potential trade for Artest is all but dead, the source said.

Artest is a LOSER & prolly wont make it through this season, he'll be arrested ...

July 18, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Bass and Stackhouse for Artest? Why would the kings do that trade?

I would take marion/haslem/blount anyday over artest/thomas/miller... Why would the heat do that? theyre not THAT dumb..

Lakers need artest in exchange for a package around lamar.. i think thats ideal for both teams

This is a dangerous trade for the Mavs. If the Mavs lose Jho, Bass, & Stackhouse for Artest then it won't make sense. JHo and Bass are up and coming and really have potentials to get really better. Artest did not prove anything with the Kings the last 2 years. I don't know if it's a wise deal. Artest could just be in for the money. He is volatile and don't know what you are going to get from him consistently. He would be good for 1 year because he will be playing for his contract. it's all about $$$$$.

The Lakers proposal is the best one but I can't see the Kings willingly deal with the Lakers. Too much bad blood there.

July 18, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Artest is a thug who plays pro ball, it's that simple.

July 18, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Why wouldn't the Mave trade Smith?
its not like he is a top-tier player in the league....
And he has actually MORE recent off-court issues than artest.

What do the mavs need ?
Toughness.
what does atrest bring?
Toughness

DUMB non-move on the mavs front

July 18, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Why do the Mavs want artest and Howard? Don't they have about identical skill sets and play the same position? Or are they just hoping to package Howard into a different trade?

July 18, 2008  10:03 AM ET

I'm with Sacramento here. Bass and Stackhouse aren't enough for someone like Artest.

July 18, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Why would the Mavs do this deal???? They are both very similar, both great defenders with the ability to score

Yea Ill give you that, but Howard is too much for this mid-level exception cancer...

July 18, 2008  11:00 AM ET

oops- meant josh Howard.....Not j Smith.

July 18, 2008  11:02 AM ET

I think it's wise of Dallas to pass on Artest. He wouldn't make them better.

I actually agree with Heat Fan on this. A lots of these guys need a change of venue. Miller at center with Mourning as a defensive backstop would be nice. Artest and Beasley at forward positions is a little small, but another big could be obtained.

July 18, 2008  11:20 AM ET

I disagree, I think he would make Dallas better, no one fears the Mavs anymore, theyre soft. Dirk may be the biggest woos in the nba, they need some presence in the paint, on offense and defense.

This should hav e been a no-brainer for the Mavericks. They pick up one of the leagues best perimeter defenders, which they desperately need, while eliminating Howard and his marijuana induced disappearing act. Maybe Cuban will reconsider after watching the Clippers and Trailblazers push the Mavs out of the playoffs next year.
