Pelz: Tiger was lucky to win Open

Phil Mickelson's coach Dave Pelz says his man has the best finishing game in the world. He also thinks Tiger was lucky to win the US Open. I give Tiger all the credit in the world but I'm a stats guy," Pelz said at the opening of one of his renowned short-game schools at Killeen Castle in Co Meath. "I look at Mickelson's worst three drives and he made two doubles and a bogey and then I look at Tiger's worst three drives and he made eagle, birdie, par. Tiger's three-under, Phil's five-over. Tiger's drives were worse than Phil's, yet finished in better spots. "When Phil hit his bad three woods they went in the deep six-inch rough; when Tiger hit his bad ones they went into the next fairway or the trampled-down dry dirt. So if you're going to miss, miss big and have a unique set of circumstances when your knee hurts so bad before the tournament that all you do in the build-up is putt all day, every day and go on to make 75 footers, 50 footers, 40 footers..."

Message to Dave Pelz, SHUT UP!!!! Stop making excuses for Phil Mickelson. Tiger play with a torn ACL and 2 broken bones in his leg. Your guy Mickelson would have sit out with the injuries that Tiger had. And when Mickelson pair with Tiger at the US Open for the first 2 rounds, he spit the bit. And yesterday Mickelson was 9 over par in the 1st round of the British Open.

Wow. What an idiot. Why is it so hard for people to admit that Tiger is just flat out better than evertone else?

July 18, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Pelz has always been full of crap.

I don't care how good Phil's short game is, if he can't hit the fairway in the either of the Opens he is going to lose. Got it Dave?

And Woods wasn't lucky. He's good. And, he's smart enough to hit an iron off the tee when he has too. And, Tiger can hit a 3-Wood. Phil can't.

Until Phil stops this short-mantra he's got going and focuses on getting out of the tee-box he's going no where.

The only thing Tiger was lucky about is that the rest fo the PGA Tour is full of a bunch of whiny losers. They couldn't shoot a better score than a guy who was hobbling around with a torn ACL and a broken leg. If Tiger had been healthy, I can't imagine how many strokes he'd ahve won by, but I'd have to guess double digits.

July 18, 2008  08:45 AM ET

I hate these morons. I have seen Tiger hit it 250 out of a bunker with a 2 iron and put it on the green. The guy is just amazing and can hit shots no one else can. Besides Phil has a history of not being clutch. This article should be about Tiger being Tiger and just why Phil stunk.

muktech....please chime in!

July 18, 2008  09:06 AM ET

It's too early in the morning for all this hate! Tiger could've played with a bum knee AND his shoes on the wrong feet and still won. No luck involved when it comes to Tiger, just PURE DOMINANCE!

July 18, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Dave Pelz is making himself look moronic. All he is doing is giving further proof as to why Tiger is better than Phil and everyone else. Scrambling is part of the game and what does one do when he hits a bad shot? Scramble to make the lowest score possible. Sounds like Tiger did his job and Phil didn't maybe Phil needs to find one more instructor to help him with this. He already employs Pelz and Harmon.

July 18, 2008  10:02 AM ET

He's right! Tiger hit it all over the place, Mediate was up the middle all 4 days but it came down to the putting.

July 18, 2008  10:03 AM ET

He may be a "stats guy", but I'm a "results guy".

July 18, 2008  10:03 AM ET

sorry...all 5 days.

July 18, 2008  10:51 AM ET

As can be seen with the first round of the open yesterday, Phil Mickelson can't play well on the biggest stages. Call him the A-Rod of golf, wait a sec, he isn't even that good at non-majors. Sounds like a bitter coach who can't come to terms with just how good Tiger is.

July 18, 2008  10:51 AM ET

I wouldn't call it luck about Tiger missing the fairway and finding the other fairway and couldn't help but notice that Tiger had a better angle on his approach shot from the other fairway. I have the feeling that Tiger is taking a page out of the amateur golfbook and missing fairways like he did is more by design than luck.

Secondly, Tiger sucked it up and took the bull by the horns to win the U.S. Open.

Finally, if I was Phil, I would consider of getting rid of his camp because obviously they are coming up with the wrong game plan. Yesterday, Phil didn't even reach the fairway with a long iron when he should have used driver. Obviously, Phil's game plans do not account for any errors and is based on perfect golf. Phil have you ever heard of a contingency plan? There is no doubt that Phil has all the physical tools and the most talent, but he plays with the strategy of an amateur. What will Phil do next? This was a question that was posed on the FORD commercials he did a couple of years ago. I guess he is trying to live by that instead of developing a sound strategy that would have led and lead to a lot of majors.

July 18, 2008  10:58 AM ET

pelz and phil both have MOOBS.

Phil is pathetic. I don't care about the wind or bad conditions. If he is supposed to be a top player on the tour then he should know how to adjust his game to compensate.

July 18, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Pelz is as overrated as Leadworser and his opinion as about as usefull as **** on a bull!

July 18, 2008  10:59 AM ET

What! the word t#*s is offensive?

July 18, 2008  11:30 AM ET

YDT8523: Your comment should end this post. You hit it right on the head. Tiger for 5 - 10 years has been having knee problems and kicking everyones ****. Pelz should look at career winnings when he looks at those stats.

July 18, 2008  11:31 AM ET

STOP HATIN" PELZ!! You are a scientist, not an athlete. Phil would be great without you, just like Tiger is great without you. Phil's short game is not better than Tiger's. By your logic of Phil and tiger missing fairways, it comes down to short game for them both, which by the wa includes putting, Phil would beat Tiger most of the time. Since that is not remotelt the case, his short game cannot be better than Tigers. Period. Maybe Phil doesn't win as often as his talent suggest is because he listens to people like you instead of his own instincts.

Well, I suppose if Jordan had missed any one of his last minute shots, the other team might have won. Or if Brady had more bad days than good, the Patriots might lose more. Or if the desert got more rain, it might not be a desert. I mean, this guy Pelz and the "what-if" logic is just stupid stuff.
