Suns seek veteran point guard

The Suns need to sign three players to reach the 13-man roster minimum. The priority was to land a veteran point guard before signing a wing and a big man. Phoenix will pursue Sam Cassell, Damon Stoudamire or Jason Williams to be its backup point and Carlos Arroyo if he fell to minimum-contract status. Shaun Livingston, a 22-year-old former No. 4 pick, could be brought in if he checks out with the medical staff. He may be a year away from returning to full strength after tearing four left knee ligaments and dislocating his patella in February 2007.

i dearly hope the celtics hold on to cassell. he was such a force of the bench. it's been awhile since i've seen so much energy from a bench player.

Celtics don't need Cassell, they have Rondo and House... That's good enough.. They can let him go... He was only riding the bandwagon for a ring anyway...

I thought Shaun Livingston was under contract for the Clips??

July 18, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Shaun is an UFA Bloodclott

July 18, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Jason Williams could b a solid backup, but not really sure if he can play all season with the Suns uptempo .

July 18, 2008  09:05 AM ET

Livingston will be good. He should be healthy and has so much to prove and he is very young w/ 3 years experience

July 18, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Sam Cassell isn't leaving Boston. Damon Stoudamire is OLD but he could play some minutes behind Nash and Barbosa.

July 18, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Jason Williams is a good option and he will be like Kwame Brown in the fact he will be commanding a much lower salary

July 18, 2008  09:29 AM ET

I thought Cassell said that he would like to play for the Nuggets..shrugs..

July 18, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Yes, Jason Williams is the best choice for a backup point guard out of the options mentioned. From what I remember, he's not as old as Cassell and Damon Stoudamire.
The Suns don't need any more old players because of their fast style of play, so that rules out Cassell.
Damon's last name Stoudamire is too close to Amare's last name Stoudemire, which would lead to confusion, so he should be out as well.
Jason Williams is an exciting player that should be able to fit in with the Suns. Besides, he has played with Shaq before, so there's some familiarity.

I don't think the Celts want Cassell........I know I don't want him in Boston.

July 18, 2008  10:01 AM ET

HMMMMMMM.........

why do they need a 'veteran' point guard?
they have NASH and Barbosa

What is an OLD man going to do in Phoenix's up tempo offense?
this makes no sense

July 18, 2008  11:31 AM ET

White Chocolate would be an excellent backup for Nash. Signing Cassell just puts them in the same position next year. Livingston is probably finished, and Stoudamire is too old for this offense.

July 18, 2008  11:45 AM ET

They will still suck until they remove the anchor.

July 18, 2008  11:51 AM ET

Nice options there Mr.Kerr, way to goooo towards a ring!!!!
cassell, JWil, Liv, Damon - good bunch to look for; Also consider Olwokandi, jerome james as Shaq'a backup while you'r at it

Barbosa proved last year that he is not a point guard. Nash had to play too many minutes yet again. Get a decent backup and let him be the shooter off the bench.

I say J-Will's got to be the only one that would be a fit in the Suns game. Livingston's injury was so severe it'll be another year to even know if he can continue to play. Damon and Sam = AARP.

Funny stuff ESPN

Hey, how about Vin Baker or Tractor Traylor to back-up Amare?!

Alight first off if you have a back up point guard, you usually would want someone who is not almost a decade older than your starter. Cassell I like but he is pushing it. I mean he was sleeping on the sideline in the finals during the game. Nash needs someone that wont loose a step behind him. Jason Williams is a solid guard with potential to shine with the right players around him. He has similar style of play as Nash refering to fast break play, as well as his for lack of a better word flashy passing style. If he works on his perimeter shooting he could fill in the spot the Suns need.
