Cardinals looking for lefthander

Look for the Cardinals to make a move soon to try to bolster their playoff chances. The front office has some financial flexibility, and manager Tony La Russa is pushing for a move, at least the addition of a left-handed reliever like Brian Fuentes or Ron Mahay.

I am totally impressed with the Cardinals performance so far this season. I think they should go after whoever will put them over the top!!!

A closer who happens to be another left handed arm would be nice. I don't know about Fuentes. Everyone is after him so I fear someone is going to grossly over pay.

Must be nice to be Fuentes, having everyone want you

I don't care who he's in love with, we need Fuentes. Badly.

probably right on this one cardsfan2, this is an even year, which is good for the cards.

It's going to be a fun summer Tony. The Cubs are very strong, no doubt about it. The Brewers aren't going to go away. Even the Reds are showing signs of life against some good teams.

July 19, 2008  11:35 AM ET

I was high on the reds early in the year, but the cubs are definitely going to be tough.

July 19, 2008  12:22 PM ET

The Cardinals are hanging around. If I was the Brewers and Cubs, I'd worry. If they get Wainwright back, and make a couple deals for bullpen help and a bat, it could get interesting.

July 19, 2008  04:02 PM ET

The think the Cards will at least get wild card without any trades (if not NL Central, Cards aren't that far behind the Cubs) ,but a left handed closer would be almost magical.

July 19, 2008  04:53 PM ET

I'd be happy with either Marte our Fuentes, but LH relief help is a must.....

I think this is going to be one of the best NL Central races in years......especially if the Cards get Wainwright and Carpenter back and healthy.

July 19, 2008  05:39 PM ET

I like the Cards, but I'm afraid they'll fade. Milwaukee and Chicago have better starting pitching, and the Brewers' lineup can be awesome.

July 19, 2008  06:34 PM ET

T&R has named every MLB team as a rumored destination for Fuentes, however they have completely ignored what I heard about him finishing the season driving for Joe Gibbs Racing.

July 19, 2008  07:10 PM ET

We need to do something. I wasn't worried when the Pirates were scoring runs. They score a lot of runs. I am worried now that San Diego is scoring a lot of runs.

Here comes Milwaukee next week.

How come this rumor about the Cardinals came out of the Chicago Tribune? The Post-Dispatch whines about needed trades but you never get any good info. Is management playing it close to the vest or is the paper not digging?

Our starters will be among the best if Carpenter and Wainwright come back healthy. Why do we seem to be concentrating on finding an outfielder when a middle infielder who can hit would be a big help?

July 20, 2008  06:51 AM ET

TLR has always been big on a good defensive team. Izturis, Kennedy, Miles, & Ryan has done a pretty good job defensively this year and I believe that's why they aren't looking for a middle infielder right now. I agree, I would like to see them pick up a middle infielder that can produce a little more offensively too. The Cards were looking for another right handed bat protection for Albert but a good lefty out of the bullpen is what we really need right now.

July 20, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Brian Roberts would look great in Cardinal red. I'd like to see him at the top of the order. Send the O's Miles or Kennedy and an outfielder.

July 20, 2008  11:19 AM ET

I have no idea on why Brian roberts has not been traded yet. The Cubs could not pull thr trigger to get this guy. You would think that someone would have by now!

July 20, 2008  01:21 PM ET

I'd be willing to send Miles and any of our outfield prospects not named Rasmus to the O's for Roberts. I wouldn't want to send any of the current 3 starting outfielders. Roberts and Schumaker at the top of the order setting the table for the big bats would look very good.

I would rather keep MIles and send Adams Kennedy and Chris Duncan to secure some bullpen help. I think when Duncan had his sports hernia operated on the Dr. cut his berries off. That guy went from being a legit power hitter to a bigger uglier version of Greg Jefferies.
