David Ortiz is expected to spend a week on a rehab assignment, helping Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket sell out seven games, before rejoining the Red Sox on Friday. It's perfect timing to allow general manager Theo Epstein to evaluate whether he needs to pursue Mark Teixeira or another impact hitter.

just another decoy they don't need him, but what the heck, what's another 20 mil between friends...still thing manny/david combo at dh, ellsbury, moss, coco, jd drew, youk at 1B is good what they need to think about is a catcher and another good outfielder, if there is any available, bringing in Tex would be fine, what they going to do with youk? tyrade for an outfielder? No stay pat, and develop another outfielder, I'm not privey to their farm developement, but is there a catcher and an outfielder developing?

July 19, 2008  11:46 AM ET

not to mention a SS...

July 19, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Boras is doing everything in his power to keep Teixeira on the front page. That's his job.

July 19, 2008  11:56 AM ET

I know cardsfan2, but tex did it himself with the three hr game.

July 19, 2008  12:02 PM ET

I'd be looking at this if I were Theo. I know Youkilis is a fan favorite; but, Teixeira a first in the Boston lineup would be even more scary than it is now. As long as he's fielding a winning team the fans won't do anything more than grumble a bit.

i think the guy has shown himself to be one of the very top GM's in the game.

Manny out....Teixiera in

July 19, 2008  12:11 PM ET

Cardsfan2: if the cash box is unlimited, OK, But if they want to spend in the right direction, it has to be an outfielder and a SS. and a Catcher. But I agree, adding the tex man, would be nice addition, maybe some middle relief. It seems to me, that the yanks, and redsox appear to look within, and want to cut back on lux tax, mostly the yanks, with their very high payroll, next year and this off season will be very interesting with these two clubs. with the loss of high paid players, the yanks will need to be ready, maybe this mid year, before all is lost (regarding available '09 players.)

July 19, 2008  12:19 PM ET

A one-year plan at SS would be nice, and a catcher to begin the transition post-Varitek.

What about a trade to bring Omar Vizquel and Benjie Molina from SF? Send the Giants some hitters in return. Maybe...?

July 19, 2008  12:41 PM ET

tell it like it is: not bad consult with Theo..

July 19, 2008  01:32 PM ET

Is it really worth some good prospects for a guy you dont really need?

July 19, 2008  01:39 PM ET

I think it's a foregone conclusion that Teixeira stays in Atlanta and hits the FA market. This is just Boras keeping him on the front page. No one is willing to give up more than the 2 picks to rent him.

July 19, 2008  01:48 PM ET

How about getting a catcher hat can actually contribute to games...and don't give me the "He handles the pitching staff well' garbage either. The guy's batting.215!!!!

July 19, 2008  02:30 PM ET

As a sox fan it pains me to agree that Varitek is overrated. You can be a team leader and handle the pitching staff but you still have to be somewhat productive at the plate. He has looked downright horrible recently. DO NOT trade for Bengie Molina. He is the fattest and slowest player in the majors

July 19, 2008  02:45 PM ET

basically youkilis will be in any offer for texeira so tex would be replacing youk which would be a power improvement but not obp or avg

July 19, 2008  03:42 PM ET

The cash box is actually unlimited for the Red Sox. They are also absolutely determined to supplant the Yankees as the premiere franchise. They will have to do everything they can to keep beating the Yankees if they want to accomplish the goal.

Standing pat and waiting for the farm is not an option if that's the goal.

July 19, 2008  05:00 PM ET

Tony, I completely agree.

If you ask me its Atlanta's attempt to create a market for Tex. Don't get me wrong he's a real nice player. But Youk's salary versus Tex combined with Tex's impending free agency it just doesn't make sense to me. Just my opinion.

July 19, 2008  05:24 PM ET

Wish i had bought tickets to the game in portland. DON'T TRADE YOUKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

July 19, 2008  05:33 PM ET

Why the hell is the Chicago Tribune reporting this ****. Don't they have enough **** stories against the Bulls and White Sox. They should be making more articles on the overrated Cubs.

July 19, 2008  05:38 PM ET

The Angels need Teixiera.
