Texas on Friday retired the jerseys of nine former Longhorns in football, basketball and baseball. maybe thay need to retire major applewhite's jersey and wipe Chrissy Simms from the books. good for Vince, hope it has a good year next year in the pro's.

July 19, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Durant? I don't know about that.

July 19, 2008  12:29 PM ET

UT retired Young's and Durant's numbers... two players while outstanding, didn't even graduate from UT. I don't know the rest, I am not a UT fan, however, ****?!?

If your number gets retired or your name goes up on a ring of honor, you should have at least graduated from the school.

Frankly, I think it cheapens the accomplishments of the players who played all four years for the university, any university.

A guy goes to school for one year, doesn't graduate, and gets his number retired? They didnt even make the Final Four that year. Seems pretty crazy to me.

July 19, 2008  12:33 PM ET

I'm glad, he's one of the best ever to come through the school, he deserves this.

July 19, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Brooks Kieschnick? Why?

July 19, 2008  12:45 PM ET

how about retiring kobe's or lebron number from duke.oops they didn't go to college and only ONE YEAR at any school to have your number retired is just plain STUPID.way to go texas for complete ignorance

July 19, 2008  01:02 PM ET

I agree with George, why Brooks?

I also agree that you should at least spend a few years at the university, if not graduate before you start retiring numbers, and this goes for any institution!

July 19, 2008  01:36 PM ET

Vince went back to UT this past semester, he is finishing his degree.

Their ignorance of what? How much experience have you had running a school or athletic program?

July 19, 2008  06:52 PM ET

You don't need to have such experience to form an opinion! Radioman has a good point, if you are going to retire a number after just ONE YEAR you must not have that great of a program to begin with!

July 19, 2008  07:28 PM ET

Durant was Player of the year....VY proved he was the TRUE Heisman winner when going head to head against Bush (forget about the money from Agents situation with Bush as the Heisman should be taken from him and given to the runner up-VY) in the Rose Bowl...The nation saw the Best College Football performance in a BIG game in half a century.

After over 130 years of great athletics Texas does not have a lot of retired Jersey's. STOP the Jealousy and stop drinking the Hatorade!

July 19, 2008  08:10 PM ET

UNC, one of the most successful basketball programs in the history of the game, would retire Durant's jersey by their rule of any player that wins a national player of the year award gets their number in the rafters. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet for any basketball program to accept a tradition like UNC's.

July 19, 2008  08:50 PM ET

For the moron who does not think Vince Young graduated from the university of texas... He did. In fact there was a media firestorm about him going back to school during his offseason program at tennessee. This guy needs to shut his lips and go away.

July 19, 2008  09:31 PM ET

I Agree...if you don't know what your talking about...shut the heck up!!! VY is giong back to school to finish his degree....he promised his mother!! There is a reason TEXAS Athletics are always in the top 2 in the nation. (Stanford and TEXAS) B/c we do know what we are doing!!! Sure the KD argument is a legit one...but he did win 7 POY awards and if your objecting to the number 10 not being retired...you deserve to be shot or move to college station or oklahoma!!!

HOOK 'EM HORNS!!

"Lighten up Francis."

Besides, the way you wrote that, you actually stated that anyone that wants the #10 retired should be shot or move to a better part of the country. That includes you horn. So much for that top 2 education.

Vince Young put on the greatest performance ever in the USC game....should have his number retired. But Durant.....are you kidding me?

July 19, 2008  11:43 PM ET

Yeah, I don't get it with Durant either. Unless they are predicting what he will do in the pros. But with Vince, that is a no-brainer. He was amazing. Not just awesome, he was simply electrifying. Look at the guy who won the Heisman-Bush. He had a pretty good year, but he didn't show up to the degree that Vince did. Vince was always a threat. He freaked out every defense he played. He was the ultimate dual threat Q.B. The man was a decent passer, sometimes very good. But when you couple his able passing skills with his ridiculous knack for reading the D. and then maxing his stellar elusive abilities, man... what a package. Go ahead, watch the Rose Bowl again and tell me he isn't the man. Tell me he isn't the MVP of the National Champs. Tell me you would rather have that little baby from USC as your Q.B. Tell me you think Reggie Bush is better than Vince. USC had a coffin full of big name players who couldn't get it done against a very good Texas team and an AMAZING Texas Q.B. Hurumph!

July 19, 2008  11:48 PM ET

That's Hedley! And further more and so on.

here is the thing. the four year star is a thing of the past. esp in basketball. Texas knows this and by honoring these guys they are screaming at the top shelf recruits "hey, come and stay for a year, if you are a stud we will honor you.". I think its smart. You may not like it, but this is today's sports.

oh and HOOK'EM beotches!!!!
