Florida charges more for Wings games

Miami Herald writer George Richards recently wrote about the Florida Panthers decision to charge $25 more per ticket when they play the Red Wings. Five of the first 16 home games will be considered premium games, with $25 added to all single-game tickets, the team said. They are: Detroit, New Jersey (Nov. 26), the Rangers (Nov. 28), Tampa Bay (Dec. 26) and Montreal (Dec. 29). Opening night will not be subject to the premium charge, and neither will tickets bought as part of a multigame plan. The Panthers will release the remainder of the premium games once the season begins.

WOW, this is a terrible decision. I hope nobody buys single game tickets for these games. I can understand a small premium but $25 per ticket.

Can they do that? $25! That's extortion!

BTW, who in blazes is Max Nicastro? And, why is his picture in this Panthers story? Other than the sweater, I don't get the connection here.

The people running the organization are such idiots on this one! They decide that when good teams that are worth watching come in to play, they should charge more. Economically, that is a bad move, because now attendance stays the same, no matter who comes to town.

July 19, 2008  02:42 PM ET

I think that other teams should charge less money when florida visits their arena.

A third rounder who won't get to wear a Detroit jersey again for a couple of years at least! They could've used any of the current Cup winners. Datsiuk, Z-berg, Lindstrom, even Chili or MacCarthy!

July 19, 2008  03:01 PM ET

I hear they are giving people $25 back when the Leafs are in town.

July 19, 2008  03:44 PM ET

Makes sense, all the teams listed have fans that travel to games (or local fan base). Too bad this means locals are getting the brunt of it through.

July 19, 2008  04:12 PM ET

wait a minute... does anyone even go to Florida Panthers games??

July 19, 2008  04:44 PM ET

This really isn't anything new. Went I went out to watch a game between the Wings and Coyotes last year, it was more per ticket for the WIngs games then the regular games. Maybe it's due to all the retirees and transplants from Michigan down to Florida and Arizona.

There's your "non traditional" hockey market strategy Mr. Stoopid Head Bettman...uit...now...please...
To all of those who get on me when I mention how hockey in Fla is like NASCAR in The Bronx...go to heck (take that censors!)

Can someone please tell me who Datsiuk, Lindstrom, or MacCarthy is? I know of a Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and McCarty, but none of those three ring a bell. Someone please help me out here. My hockey world is turned upside down.

Why extra Habs and not Pens or Rangers? cant see too many ppl caring about montreal,

July 19, 2008  08:02 PM ET

At least MAX NICASTRO seems happy about this decision.

Are the visitors fees in the NHL a flat rate or a percentage ot the gate? In other words, will the wings and other "premium" teams see any of the premium price for the tickets?

July 20, 2008  12:18 AM ET

The coyotes do that to. It's how "bad" teams still manage to fill out the cashier's drawer... No big deal! Just business. Don't care, I have season tickets anyway... Just kidding.

You just lost any credibility you may have ever had on these threads. People do care about Montreal. They are a very good team. Not to mention the fact that they are the most storied franchise in the history of the NHL.

The Colorado Rockies last year raised the ticket prices when the Yankees came to town by a lot more than $25. I didn't go because the seats that I normally bought for $18 last year were raised to $60 for the Yankees games. They do it because they know that people will want to come watch. Really, it seems like they should lower prices for games that they know they are going to sell out. Every owner in professional sports is greedy, and to me it shows that they don't care about the fans. I believe in free enterprise as much as the next guy, but I really do think that there should be a law against this. You should pay the same for a game against the Red Wings as you do for a game against the Blue Jackets. You should also pay the same for playoff tickets in any round as you do for a normal regular season game. It's not right. Unfortunately, all we can do about it is complain.

July 20, 2008  04:58 AM ET

The ticket prices are rediculous anyway. Why keep cheating your fans by messing with the prices when these teams come to town. They're just cheating the common working man who now can't take his kids to a hockey game.
