ChiSox, Brewers inquire about Street

The Brewers and White Sox are two of the teams to have inquired about A's closer Huston Street, SI.com has learned. Milwaukee's interest is no surprise since the contending Brewers have a willing owner, an aggressive general manager, a stash of prospects to trade and a deep desire to improve their bullpen. The interest of Chicago's South Side team is more curious since its bullpen has been among the best in baseball this year. The White Sox usually seem to favor flamethrowers, too. But they have traded for a variety of relievers in recent years, and their GM, Ken Williams, has been A's GM Billy Beane's most frequent trading partner. Should Tampa Bay become involved, they'd also have a good shot at Street, who's been a generally effective closer. The Rays are said not to have talked to Oakland about Street to date, however. The Los Angeles Dodgers could eventually show interest, as well, since they've lost their closer Takashi Saito until at least September, and maybe for the year. T

The last Oakland A out of that "beautiful" park please turn out the lights. I wonder if Mil wins the world series with him if they will name a street after him.

i dont know what the white sox would give for him , but hey , why not , hed just make the bullpen that much better....but i think they need a starter more than a reliever

do not be suprised, they got some chips Broadway, Fields , Owens, also in Kenny I trust the guy is a the most underrated GM in baseball

My impulse is to say I want the Cards to trade for him. However, it's Oakland and he's having a very down year compared to the previous two. I just don't trust dealing with Billy Beane for pitchers.

July 20, 2008  10:28 AM ET

I can't really understand the White Sox's involvement. The Dodgers and Brewers, understandable. I think the point that should be taken from all of this is that the Brewers aren't done. If they get Durham and/or Taschner and Street, then they've addressed their most glaring weaknesses.

I believe Cubs fans could be crying in their beers again come October.

I agree. Barry Zito ring a bell? It appears Billy the trade meister is very good at giving away majic beanes for a chance to reload with other teams prospects. Zito however only had that one good exceptional year and I was always amazed that the pub out there was that he was supposed to be a stud pitcher. Why? the surprising thing with Zito is that his ERA has begun to really rise. If anything being in the NL i would have expected it to go south and not north.

I agree with you, CF2, Street got my interest when his name first surfaced, but I'd rather they go after Fuentes. I think the Mulder experience has soured me on trading for Oakland pitchers.

July 20, 2008  02:01 PM ET

TenRingsSTL:
Try the Mulder situation (we could have had Dan Haren & Daric Barton now), Hudson went to the Braves & has been hurt a lot, also the total debacle in Barry Zito (you think Billy Beane didn't know about that guy when he let him go??) Mulder has just decided to rehab on the Cardinals dime ala Mike Hampton of the Braves(who probably used steroids.)

Huston Street to the Brewers makes the most sense b/c they need a closer really really bad, but they just made a trade for Sabathia, & now today for Ray Durham, maybe they are throwing all their eggs in a basket this yr.

July 20, 2008  02:34 PM ET

Even if the Brewers get Street, it still doesn't solve THE ERRORS problem the brew crew seem intent on committing. The past 2 weeks have been a disaster. Then again, they are picking up the Giants second baseman today (name escapes me) so maybe there is a little help on the way.

July 20, 2008  03:31 PM ET

There is absolutely no doubt the Brewers are going all out for THIS year. Street is at least a young guy still under team control so he's not a rental or an over the hill player.
