Preds' '03 draft ready to pay off?
Let the record show that constructing a core around young defensemen can take half a decade. In 2002, Nashville Predators management (general manager David Poile, assistant GM Ray Shero, and director of player personnel Paul Fenton), with input from amateur scouts, recognized a once-in-a-generation opportunity. The 2003 draft projected to be one of the deepest ever, prompting Nashville to stockpile 13 picks. In 2008-09, Fenton and the Predators are hoping the core of their 2003 draft - defensemen Ryan Suter (drafted seventh overall), Kevin Klein (No. 37), Shea Weber (No. 49), and Alexander Sulzer (No. 92) - can push Nashville, a first-round playoff loser four years running, to a deep postseason run.

It will take 5 YEARS to set up a team(s) core defense? Why even bother! If I was a fan of hockey (which I'm not, but trying) and my team already was bad......having to wait another 5 years just to get the "core" set.....damn, I think I would just sell my season tickets and look for a new hobby.

Dan Ellis was the only thing that kept them in for six games against the Wings. You obviously didn't watch a playoff game.

The Preds better hope that Suter pays off... they drafted him ahead of Phaneuf, Kostitsyn, Getzlaf, Carter, Perry, etc, and they've all made big impacts on their teams already.
It doesn't take 5 years for first-rounders to develop, they just have a **** front office.

The Dumont-Arnott-Radulov line finally clicked in the mid-season, but that d u m b **** Rads must have screwed things up and went overseas despite having a valid contract with Preds. I like this organization and their roster and wish them good luck in the forthcoming season.
DEVO, it takes time for lots of players (d-men in particular) to transform from the junior-level players into true professionals. Nashville owns one of the youngest organizations in the league and those guys mentioned in the article are their 'first generation'. Every team (and starts-up in particular) needs a bunch of guys it will be associeted with. Besides, in the salary cap era it is crucial to develop your own group because it is simply cheaper than improvement through free agency

Good D prospects usually do take longer to develop than the forwards in their respective draft years.
Sho Nuff.....Suter was drafter ahead of Phaneuf? Really? I didnt know that. What could've been....

It shouldn't take a first rounder five years to develop, maybe a second rounder should be about 3 and 5 for a third rounder sounds about right. I think this truth was meant to say the players will reach their prime in 5 years not necessarily just contribute in five years.

If ellis is so good why couldn't he steal a series ?
He might be good but still unproven as he has never played a full year as a starter.
PS your absolutly right about me not watching nashville in the playoffs was probably watching a better series or banging some trim !

t-murder, I totally agree.
Look on career stats of Weber and Suter:
Suter has played 229 official games so far (i.e. only 14 less than Phaneauf) and Weber has recorded 161 games but he was slowed down by an injury last season. Weber scored 17 goals in his second NHL season. After all, they both were important players for a team that made it to the Play-offs in every post-lockout season. Any statement poinitng out they don't develop properly would be unjustified.
BGM,
below you'll find the link to the 2003 draft selections, round by round:
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl2003e.html
It was indeed very deep draft. And very successful for lots of GMs - out of first 24 selections only one player hasn't had a debut yet while just 2 others have not reached a 100-game mark.

Because Ellis wasn't the only guy on the ice and other Preds played by far worse then their opponents?

The Preds have some great young talent! That will make them competitive on the ice but will do nothing to fix their current problems with city, ownership, fans, finances, etc.!
Unfortunately, nothing will happen to the Preds and none of those problems will be address as long as they have the most despised midget protecting them!

Semi-interesting article...but these guys aren't enough to make a serious difference for the Preds. They won't ALL suddenly mature and be effective at once. The 5-year rule is a 'general average' that applies league-wide but it doesn't mean that all 4 of those guys can step up to another level. If anything, they might want to consider Weber and Klein as trade-bait.
