Six teams curious about George

The probability of swingman Devean George returning to the Mavericks next season appears to be decreasing every day. George, a free agent, has at least a half dozen other teams interested in signing him. The Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Hornets have expressed interest in George. And the NBA champion Boston Celtics could be next in line after they lost 6-8 forward James Posey in free agency. The Mavericks, however, only have two open roster spots left with little money to work with after signing center DeSagana Diop. The Mavericks have the option of re-signing George for more than a minimum contract, however, because he was on their roster last season for about $2.3 million, but Mavs president Donnie Nelson isn't optimistic that they will get a deal done.

he still plays?

July 20, 2008  09:09 AM ET

He was hurt last year.....early on

He's a deecnt player-
will give you defense
Has championship experience

I'd pick him up if I needed a back-up Small forward
Wouldn't give him any serious $....but he's woth a mid-level exemption

July 20, 2008  09:15 AM ET

after he through the wrench in the initial Kidd trade to try to maintain his Bird rights, I think the Mavs decided those Bird rights would not be implemented. see ya Devan.

please join heat fan haters

July 20, 2008  09:36 AM ET

interesting to see where he ends up and how much playing time he will get.

July 20, 2008  09:58 AM ET

When a team won't meet your salary demands because they've just signed DeSagana Diop. It's time to move on. His agent must have posted this thread. 6 teams interested....Puhleeze

July 20, 2008  10:03 AM ET

I don't see Spurs, Phoenix, Cleveland and New Orleans interested.

July 20, 2008  10:38 AM ET

I agree with vaughn about the Spurs and Hornets probably not being ultimately interested. But Phoenix, Cleveland, Minny, and Boston would probably be reasonable. No way he's worth a mid-level, though jgb! He's gonna have to play for the minimum, or just above it, after he nearly fell off the map last year.

July 20, 2008  10:55 AM ET

If your team's big offseason move is signing Devean George, then you might want to find a new team to cheer for.

July 20, 2008  12:10 PM ET

unless ur team is already really good...

July 20, 2008  12:45 PM ET

Hllywd, that's the funniest post you've ever written, and it sounds 100% right! I didn't think anyone leave alone everyone would be interested in Devean George.

vaughn9, how's the headache?

July 20, 2008  12:56 PM ET

He isnt a swingman because he cant play SG, he is strictly a SF........

July 20, 2008  01:05 PM ET

George is very athletic however not too bright.
His mistakes and the resulting points for the other team out weighed any contributions he made.

Some of us Laker fans were glad to get rid of him, we called him Dumb Devean.

July 20, 2008  01:09 PM ET

after watching him play these past few seasons in dallas i can tell you thank god he wouldnt be here. he cant shoot the three anymore and he doesnt dribble or play that great of defense. those rings with LA really went to his head on how good he thinks he is.

July 20, 2008  01:14 PM ET

Glad the Lakers weren't mentioned. Even Walton was an upgrade, and he sux

July 20, 2008  01:16 PM ET

Luke Walton is a great passer and at times a good scorer...I don't know why everyone hates him so much.

July 20, 2008  01:50 PM ET

The Minnesota Timberwolves need point guards. Their only PG under contract is Randy Foye. Devean George can play some defense, which would help because the Timberwolves have little to no defensive presence on the court. As an added bonus, Minnesota is his hometown, so don't be surprised if you see him coming off the bench in Minnesota because he would see plenty of minutes.

July 20, 2008  01:53 PM ET

That must be a typo, San Antonio better not be interested in this fella. How could he possibly help the Spurs. They better start focusing on J.R. Smith if they are looking for players to play on the perimeter.

"That must be a typo, San Antonio better not be interested in this fella. "

He would be perfect for SA.....if they get him on the cheap
He is a career 20ish minute pr game player
can give them good back-up minutes guarding forwards and bigger guards
Bowen is like 300 already
(and actually their carer stats are very close
(other than minutes per game)

yeah and he's way younger. so he mite fit in...
