Why Angels won't trade for big bat

July, of course, heralds the season when fans wonder whether their Angels will trade for a big bat. They won't. "I don't see anyone that can come in here for two months and hand me a World Series trophy," owner Arte Moreno said. They won't trade for that big bat, not under this ownership, not if picking up Matt Holliday means giving up two good young pitchers, with no guarantee Holliday would stick around very long. "I think pitching wins," Moreno said. "If your pitching can't keep you in the game, I don't think you can win a championship."

The Angels may win the division, but they won't be going to the World Series.

It's just par for the course for us Angels fans...go the first half of the year strong...pulling out close games and having the organization tell fans that they are happy with the way the team is going and that pitching and defense wins you World Series....one problem though...it hasn't for the Angels. They won't trade anyone that has any value...or many times they they over value...for anyone that can drive in runs. They will once again win the division then come across another playoff team with good pitching and defense....plus offense and then bow out. But of course management will tell everyone what a fine season it has been.

Holliday, Bay or Teixiera would be great in that lineup. Even Beltre. Angels have great pitching, but they have trouble scoring runs.

Adam Dunn as DH would be a great move for them. I don't care if he has a low BA. His OBP is high and he will hit the ball out of any park including Anaheim and Oakland. I think they could get him fairly cheap without giving up any of their top pitching prospects. They have all the outfielders they need right now.

Holliday isn't a good fit for this team already overloaded with good gloves in the outfield. Yes, eventually Holliday is going to cost someone the GDP of a small Central American country.

It is easy to make predictions based on past years. Angels have the best pitching and why would you trade away pitchers for a guy who may be gone next year? Angels have to focus on signing K-Rod who is going to be a free agent. Angel Fan40, as an supposed Angel fan, why would take that gamble? Angels are in first place after having a horrible offensive first half. The offense is picking up now and the pitchers have the experience to take this team to the World Series.

Angels aren't going to the W.S.?? Who's stopping them Boston? Turn on ESPN later and watch the sweep. Angels also took the series in Boston recently too.

Adam Dunn would be a great move for the Angels, but who exactly would they have to give up b/c if Dunn leaves the Reds will get a 1st rd pick & a sandwich 1st rd pick so the Angels would have to give up a few prospects. But definitely the pricetag for Mark Teixera & Matt Holliday would be higher since Holliday has 1 more yr on his contract & Teixera is just a renta-player (but he provides good versatility w/his switch hitting capabilities in the playoffs.

The Angels don't want to pay for a big-bat now b/c they thought they were going to have all the power they needed w/Hunter & Matthews and that has turned out to be a dud!! Plus Vlad Guerrero is a FA after this season & they want to have some funds to pay him. Jon Garland is a FA, Francisco Rodriguez is a FA so the Angels have some big pay-roll decisions down the road, but they can't win the WS w/o another bat!! It puts too much pressure on Vlad in the playoffs.

Angels dont need Holliday.....He is not worth giving up pitching

Smart ownership. And as it seems, they don't appear to need another bat, if their SWEEP OF THE RED SOX is any indication, ey Hub?

Well Madhatter, obviously you don't know anything about the Angels. The Angels have had the pitching for a while...and where has it gotten them? Great pitching can win you games but, you also need to score some runs.

it would be stupid to resign k-rod. altho he might break the record for most saves in a season, his stats show he's having one of the worst years in his career. and any closer asking for 5 years, $14-15M/each is clearly smoking some good, wishful thinking stuff.

We just beat up on the Red Sox and we now have a 5 - 1 record against them. In the past we were never able to beat them in the regular season or post-season. So things are looking up.

July 21, 2008  06:06 PM ET

The Angels are lacking a bat, which is a third baseman. We haven't had a third baseman who can drive in runs and hit homeruns since Glaus left and also no world series rings. We won't win a world series until we get a better offense. Arte Moreno has gotten us so close but now that he is one position away it seems as if he has stopped just short.

July 24, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Seems like we hear this year in and year out. We hold pat on our pitching and when the playoff's come around we can't pitch. Look at Lackey the past few games. If he pitches like this against Boston we will be hosed in October again. Open your eyes Moreno. Pitching and offense wins games........
