Phillies, Rockies discuss blockbuster

There is word that a blockbuster trade that could have sent star outfielder Matt Holliday along with Brian Fuentes to Philadelphia had been discussed. Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd is very close to Phillies GM Pat Gillick. But word also is those talks have cooled, perhaps after the Phillies sent three good prospects away for Joe Blanton.

Hang in there, only 11 more days until the trade deadline. Over/Under line on how many of these rumors will prove to have been valid...2

I can't imagine Philly having enough for this deal unless they included some starters like Mr. Burrell.

July 20, 2008  10:30 AM ET

That's exactly what I see, and I'd go for that trade. A locked down Holliday (three years) for a overpriced and contract player Burrell? I'd go for that.

July 20, 2008  10:32 AM ET

Can you imagine a Philly lineup with Victorino, Rollins, Utley, Holliday and Howard? Wow. I can't see the Rockies doing this, because I can't see the Phillies having enough/parting with enough to get these two guys.

I agree that Burrell would probably be in the deal, and he could rake in Denver.

FMSD gets the prize. Phillies sign Kenny Lofton, make the playoffs, win the World Series, and all is right with the world.

Agreed, Fuentes is pretty good, but not exactly Randy Myers in his hey-day.

I think Victorino would have to go to Colorado as well. That probably means Philly gets Willy Taveras.

Burrell is a power guy. You can't see him putting up big numbers in Colorado? True, he'll be a FA. But that way, the Rox get any draft pick compensation for him.

July 20, 2008  11:06 AM ET

If the Phillies win the World Series, nothing would be right with the world.

July 20, 2008  11:31 AM ET

the lineup of the phillies would be ridiculus!!
the rox don't waqnt old players like burrel they will take victorino and some prospects

I really don't understand the Phillies fascination with Fuestes, they really dont need another closer

July 20, 2008  12:36 PM ET

I'm with you, Wanted Man! I can't decide on the over/under - I think you set it perfectly.
The Astros have unfortunately won 4 in a row, so we probably will not made a big trade - that's all it takes for Drayton McLane to stand pat in his PR/marketing-driven world. And Darin Erstad is ofer in his little showcase weekend, so he probably won't get traded either.

It has to do with him being a lefty and taking some of the work load off of JC Romero. There is no way he would close here.

July 20, 2008  01:09 PM ET

I could see Victorino, a little. Burrell is my little wish list: he's a contract player. Good year? Must be up for a contract. Hope the Rockies don't know that. But... Don't care about pitching from the Rox. Only Holliday.

July 20, 2008  01:24 PM ET

DO IT!

July 20, 2008  02:33 PM ET

The Phillies need something to get that offense rolling again. They addresses the need for a pitcher. Mike Arbuckle said they are looking into adding a bat to the roster....Why not Holliday? It makes sense....Jenkins is strictly a bench player. Werth has proven he can play everyday, when Victorino was hurt.....I like Victorino, but a shakeup has to happen on this team.

The Phillies are close...Possibly to a championship....Blanton and Holliday could be the missing pieces that get this team to the World Series and possibly a parade in Philadelphia.

They have to start taking risks to prove to this city that they're in this to win it....

July 20, 2008  02:37 PM ET

The Phillies should sign Kenny Lofton.
Field Marshall Sunny Day | 07/20/08, 10:38 AM

I assume you're joking..... other than being a good luck charm, what does Lofton bring to the table in 2008?

July 20, 2008  03:11 PM ET

All the so called "sports guys" on ESPN, FOX, and probably behind the scenes at SI say Holliday "ain't going no-where's" any time soon. The Rockies should be adding and not subtracting (Brewers of late) to the roster.

July 20, 2008  03:45 PM ET

The three prospects they gave up for blanton are not even close to their best prospects. They still have Golston, Marson, Matt smith, and scott mathieson.

July 20, 2008  04:05 PM ET

Maybe the Rockies would like Hampton back..... after his latest groin injury, I think we'd pay them to take him..... oh wait, we already are!

July 20, 2008  04:40 PM ET

This would be a huge trade if it were to happen.

Best,
Jack Elliott
