Does NHL take Red Wings for granted?
Why did it take the NHL so long a more balanced schedule like the one the Red Wings have for the upcoming season? I'm sure it's helped in other markets. Games between Buffalo and Ottawa or the Rangers and the Devils have been welcome events during the season. But Wings-Blue Jackets carries less buzz than a pre-season game against the Leafs, and that's 100 percent true. It does illustrate though yet again how the league simply takes the Wings for granted. They are trying to build the game in every other American market except Detroit because the fans will always support the Wings here.

I remember a very empty Joe during the 80's before the arrival of Stevie Y...
I don't think it is a case of taking the Wings for granted, it is Gary's plan to cater to weak markets, particularly expansion areas where everyone except Gary knows they are doomed to fail.

hey BGM, take it easy on us Wings faithful, how many times do we have to wrap up the division title by January to convince most outsiders that its just more fun to drive around downtown Detroit and look at all the abandoned buildings then it is to go to the Joe and watch the Wings clobber Columbus 9 outta 10 times!

As another Wingnut, I would like to see more of the rest of the league than I do now. I think sports have been concerned about long distance travel and long times away from home. Perhaps these problems are finally getting addressed.

The unbalanced schedule was only there because the league takes the Wings for granted? Whoever wrote that article should be fired. The unbalanced schedule affected everbody, not just the Wings. The Wings and the Ducks are the only teams in the Campbell Conference that have gotten any media coverage the last few years. Nashville didn't even get hardly any when they were on the cusp of winning the President's Trophy a couple years back. Maybe if people in Detroit would stop complaining and start doing something, their city wouldn't be so broken down.

the logical thing is to move the wings to the eastern conference, like they did with toronto. it just makes sense with all the expansion and teams that have sprung up west of the miss. in the past 10-15 years. not gonna happen though, because with all the transplanted michiganders in the south and west, the wings are one of the few teams to consistently draw on the road. THAT's what's being taken for granted.

Maybe if people in Detroit would stop complaining and start doing something, their city wouldn't be so broken down
Please don't comment about things you know nothing about. I'm so tired of seeing folks on this list trash-talk Detroit. Give it a rest. The "people" of Detroit are some of the hardest-working, most loyal to their teams, friendliest in the country. The city of Detroit has fallen on hard times due to racism, short-sighted and badly run auto companies, corrupt governments, etc etc.
I could go on and on about it but it's easier for people from other cities to just talk down to Detroit without thinking.

To address some issues....BostonGM, Yes the economy is THAT bad here in Detroit. Being reliant on the auto industry our economy turned south about 3 years ago, not in the past 18 months (or so) like the rest of the country. We have lost several tens of thousands of jobs due to the auto industry. If you were to check the worst areas for home foreclosure you would find most are/were in the Detroit area. Texaswings...you are correct, we should be in the Eastern Conference. I have read more than a few times that the Wings travel the most miles of any team in the league. I haven't put pen to paper and checked this, but have read it several times. Check out the past play-ff opponents. It sucks as a fan when half your play-off games start at 10:30 P.M. local time due to the time change. Compare that with a N.Y. team, who I don't believe ever leave their time zone until the finals. Wingsfan...I too am sick of seeing the Bluejackets and Nashville. This division does suck, but last year the Wings record, for some strange reason (boredom?) against the Central wasn't that great. They rolled through the rest of the league tho. Lastly, Yes...Detroit as a city SUX!!!!!!! If anybody doesn't know about the trouble the Mayor and City Council are in you would laff ur arse off. Bookmark the web-page for The Detroit News and take a look at the headlines on an almost daily basis. You couldn't make this stuff up!!! Lastly part II...wtnelson...try to get a "Detroiter" to get off their arse and work, as opposed to sitting on their arse and getting free government money. It doesn't work. For some reason they think their 10th grade education should enable them to pull down 75 grand at least. Oh yeah...only 25% of Detroit public school students ever graduate high school. SORRY FOR THE RANT....

you should hope to God the AVs wouldn't have to play the Wings any more than they do....can you say....**** kicking every game?
Your lineup is a joke and you do nothing to improve it. Foote? Foppa? hahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa
Look at the stats..it may be the worst division in hockey BGM but the Wings didn't play that well against the "worst"...they sure whooped up on all the other divisions though didn't they? I don't think you'd like to see em in Boston as many times as you do Buffalo or any of the southeast teams!!
Also you may want to check out the arenas around the league when the Wings are playing. You'll see more Wings jerseys in the opposing arenas than any other visiting team.

Seeing Lidstrom tear up is a common sight here in Detroit. I'm sure he shed a tear when he won his third cup and 5th Norris Trophy.

Sorry BostonGm...I am so used to your posts pitting Chara-vs-Lidstrom I just assumed you were referring to Chara blasting Nick. My bad. Now knowing you were referring to Zetterberg I will amend my post to " Zetterberg must be tearing up from having to carry both the Cup and Conn Smyth trophys at the same time." LOL

Huh? Say what? The Wings taken for granted? Where did this come from? Everyone knows that the Detroit Wings have been the darlings of the NHL for many years! Not only are looked upon as the premier example of a well run organization by the rest of the league, they also get the benefit of the doubt more than any other team in the NHL!
Me thinks that the Detroit Free Press "reporter" who wrote this article has a little too much time on his hands! Whiner!

DCruiser...I would agree that the Wings haven't been taken advantage of, but how have they been given the benefit of the doubt more than any other team?

How about the entire 70's and most of the 80's when they were the worst team in the NHL. When I had season tix to Flyers, you couldn't find any takers for the games against Detroit. The NHL is now taking the Wings for granted?
The NHL had to carry them on their back for almost 20 years, so get over it and stop whining already.

ks, "treated special" (as they rightfully deserve to be) might have been a better choice of words.
Since the arrival of new ownership/management and Steve Y, they are given special treatment or respect or whatever you want to call it, just like the Penguins did during Mario Lemieux's glory days (and will again receive when Crosby establishes himself). Right now, the Wings are the flag bearers for the NHL. When Ken Holland speaks, the rest of the NHL listens!
Although not the smartest bunch, the NHL brass is not totally stupid! Even they are able to figure out that teams like Detroit and players like Crosby are fantastic marketing tools!
