Twins pass on Beltre trade

12:31 PM ET 07.20 | After exploring a trade for Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre, the Twins came away feeling they won't have a match. Seattle's asking price is steep because Beltre is under contract for next season and is one of the Mariners' better all-around players. On Saturday, there were indications that it might take a package of prospects, like what Oakland got from Philadelphia in this week's Joe Blanton deal. To get Blanton, the Phillies gave up two of their top four prospects, along with a third minor leaguer. For the Twins, that could mean one of their young starters -- Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Glen Perkins or Nick Blackburn -- along with additional prospects.

It's nice to see the Twins remain smart under pressure. That's too much for someone who is overpaid to begin with.

Why would anyone want beltre anyway? He's an overpriced bum. Just like Sexton!

July 20, 2008  01:19 PM ET

Yes the Twins desperately need a good 3rd baseman. But really, Beltre's numbers, .262/334 /440, just don't make my wiener tingle. Especially at $12.9 mil per.

I'm kind of surprised, I really thought Beltre to the Twins made sense and would get done. I think Seattle is unrealistic in their asking price.

For one of the Twins young starters...dream on Seattle. You can have Hernandez, though. Sheet, I could even see throwing in Bood in the bargin.

July 20, 2008  01:29 PM ET

>Boof< as in Bonser, the crappy, garbage time, mop-up long reliever.

July 20, 2008  02:04 PM ET

This team was not expecting to challenge, so why ruin the chemistry of this young team that is playing out of their minds right now. I honestly don't see how Beltre would have helped, especially after what the Twins have done to the Rangers the last two games, and considering the The Twins haven't been this highly rated in offense since 1992.

July 20, 2008  02:19 PM ET

I wouldn't doubt if this trade might still happen as Seattle realizes that it hasn't been able to blow up its roster at all as it had been promising. They might lower their expectations near the deadline.

Beltre is your classic steroid/HGH guy....

Contract year approaching.....juice up......48 hrs......stop juicing......
back down to mid 20's

I always worry about the Twins. It seems there small market mentality always hurts them in the end. Hope I am wrong this time.

Best,

Surely he'll go somewhere. The Mariners need to trade everyone and start over, ala Oakland and Florida.

July 20, 2008  06:37 PM ET

Stay away from any Seattle player they have too many bad habits !!!

July 20, 2008  06:38 PM ET

I don't know, the Brewers are the only other contender in need of a third baseman. No one else is going to want his contract.

I agree. However how much of an upgrade will he be for that type of money?? Your lucky you got Troy Glauss when you did !!!

July 20, 2008  08:51 PM ET

True. Not many teams need a 3B. Think Philly would take this guy on? Angels? Dodgers?

July 20, 2008  09:11 PM ET

Yes we are Hub Man. Yes we are! He is absolutely on fire right now.

July 20, 2008  09:14 PM ET

I looked at it again and Beltre's not much of an upgrade for the Brewers other than defense. They could use some defense though.

July 20, 2008  10:49 PM ET

Good for the Twins. They can still compete without Beltre and no point in losing a lot of prospects for a guy who might only stick around for another year!!

'This team was not expecting to challenge, '

Only because the 'experts' spent 30 seconds analysing the team by saying, Santana gone, Hunter gone, to the cellar the Twins go. Couldn't spend too much time truly analysing the team because they had to talk more about Boston's and New York's middle relievers and such...

I heard ESPN talk about Perkins and said , I don't know where they keep getting guys like Perkins...well, Hmm, let's see ESPN...Perkins was a first round draft pick. Slowey was runner up for minor league pitcher of the year last year (his numbers were unbelievable) and he had a good 2nd half in limited time in the Bigs...So did Baker in the 2nd half. Blackburn has been ready for awhile, just needed a spot.

And, of course, they didn't even bother to mention how more than half the position players were new and how Morneau and Mauer were better than their off year last year...how Kubel hit over .300 last year after finally getting healthy...

I mean, this isn't that hard to believe if they had actually taken more than 30 seconds to do their analysis...heck Delmon Young is just NOW starting to heat up...and Cuddyer has been hurt quite a bit of the season...and yet here there are...

...and BTW, this is hardly anything new. 4 division titles in 6 years and every year they're a 'surprise'.

Why aren't the White Sox a surprise? How often do THEY go to the playoffs or win the division? Look how bad they were last year. Yet somehow, it makes sense that they're in first yet the Twins being .5 games out is a miracle?
