New OKC team name will be...

Oklahoma City's team -- formerly the Seattle SuperSonics -- will be called the Thunder, according to a television report. KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City cited a source close to the ownership group for its report that the team's name will be the Oklahoma City Thunder. According to The Oklahoman newspaper's Web site, team spokesman Dan Mahoney said Saturday night no one with the basketball organization would comment on KOCO's report. The Oklahoman had a name-the-team contest, using a 64-name tournament-style bracket, and Thunder defeated Outlaws in the final.

thunder? seriously, could you get anymore generic. why not cyclones, wranglers, marshalls, rodeo, outlaws, desperados, bandits, etc. something that has to do with the region. i know they get thunder with the tornados.

This is the dumbest name for a team ever. They sound like a WNBA team, I can't believe the thunder really beat the Outlawz.

The Thunder? Sounds more like they'll be delivering hail mary's and first downs other then alley oops and 3 pointers. How is Thunder a basketball name and not a football one? Seems very out of the element of OKC.

I dont know... I think its a step up from the Super Sonics... And how about the Raptors and Grizzlies? The Raptors are named after something that was big in a movie at the time.

i vote for the divorcees or even take their old Wnba team name Storm ( i'd bet the WNBA team would beat them in a head to head match up though ). wonder if their uni's will resemble something from the arena league. the first ones will be awful you can count on that.
