Burrell unhappy with manager

Pat Burrell was not happy with Phillies manager Charlie Manuel's decision to remove him late in yesterday's 11-inning loss to the Florida Marlins. "I'm upset, absolutely," Burrell said. "I'm upset, and I have been for a long time. It's not personal. I don't want to ever come out of close games." Manuel routinely replaces his leftfielder with a speedier defender when the Phillies have leads late in games. Yesterday, Burrell was replaced by Eric Bruntlett in the bottom of the eighth with the Phils ahead, 2-1. Cole Hamels gave up a game-tying home run in the inning.

Well, you ARE slow and a lousy defender. So suck it up.

Burrell is one of those guys who will point to his outfield assists and claim that it shows he's a good fielder. Truth is, people run on him a lot because he's not. The number of assists just comes as a result of the greater than normal number of opportunities.

Maybe he is slow, but there's a better chance he'll hit the game winner than Bruntlett.

Is this your way of saying trade me before the deadline?

July 21, 2008  08:13 AM ET

The Phillies arent gonna trade him ...

July 21, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Keep the distractions coming... the Mets look better and better as time goes on :)

July 21, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Distractions?

July 21, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Tell this guy to shut up.

July 21, 2008  08:52 AM ET

The Mets are one big distraction. No reason to get hot in July when we saw how well they play in September. Easy Mets fans, I will let you know when they start awarding the division in July.
I agree with Pat. Charlie pulls him automatically all the time. Charlie is complaining about situational hitting, what about situatuional managing.

July 21, 2008  08:56 AM ET

The Mets and Phillies are killing the Braves with their implosions..... come on you guys, get your act together and take over the division so the Braves can continue to build experience with their young players and be the sellers that they should be this month..... With another abortion at home against the Nats, we should be completely out of the picture..... and we're not.....

July 21, 2008  08:58 AM ET

BTW: Burrell has always been a mediocre player for years..... along with being a jerk..... I see a steep decline after he signs his next contract.....

July 21, 2008  09:04 AM ET

Burrell has been far from mediocre since the All-Star break last year ...

July 21, 2008  09:07 AM ET

In a 3 or 4 run game, sure take him to prevent doubles in the gap or whatever...but in a one run game, when one swing ties it, there really is no point to taking him out, he doesnt kill us defensively, he gets to most balls hit in LF and never drops one and has a very good arm

July 21, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Right, Burrell really isnt bad at all .. The only people putting him down here, are Braves fans, who are upset cuz other than Chipper, the whole team sucks ...

July 21, 2008  09:12 AM ET

The bolts are loose and the wheels are on their way off...

July 21, 2008  09:15 AM ET

I'm sure this negative, selfish act is just an isolated incident for the Phillies.

Sincerely,

Naive Women

Burrell really isn't that bad of a left-fielder. Sure, he's a little slow and lacks mobility, but he catches everything that's in his range. He's yet to make an error this season. Outfield assists don't simply come from having a lot of opportunities. You have to actually execute the throw, and there aren't too many outfielders that can do that consistantly.

Regardless of whether or not Burrell is a good fielder, what he was really complaining about was that if he stayed in the game, he would've had the chance to bat in the 9th inning, with two men on base. Instead, Bruntlett struck out in his place. Burrell's been hot at the plate lately, so he deserves a chance to bat in a clutch situation. Second, Bruntlett is actually a shortstop, so he has no business playing in the outfield. If my job were taken by a guy who has little experience doing it, I'd feel insulted too. Considering how yesterday's game ended, Burrell has a right to complain.

Man that complains too much, finds himself at a nice brick wall with a knock off carton of smokes....waiting...JUST WAITING>..
