Paterno faces off-field incidents

Joe Paterno insists that he doesn't want his future coaching status to be a distraction to his team this season. However, with the status of five suspended players yet to be resolved, there are other potential diversions to what the 81-year-old Penn State coach anticipates could be a special 2008. Paterno had vowed to crack down on the incidents and suspended six players in the first three months of this year. Meanwhile, defensive tackles Chris Baker and Phil Taylor, tight end Andrew Quarless, linebacker Navorro Bowman and defensive back Knowledge Timmons still await a decision on their futures. "I'm waiting for grades," Paterno said. "They're still in summer school and they're working hard. Most of those guys, I think, will be fine. They've kind of taken their medicine. There's one or two I'm not so sure yet." It's expected that the players will either miss a game or two to start the season or will have to work their way back into their regular roles.

...But has Joe 'kind of' taken his medicine yet today?

Just the kind of problems you have now-a-days running a College Sports program. All Colleges share the same problem, it is what it is.

Too bad this isn't about Miami so all you jerk-offs can bring up thug U. But since it's Penn State it's just " it is what it is".

Make them wear whale pants for a week around campus...

July 21, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Penn State is in good shape for 2008 with or without these players. Btw, none of these players are in legal trouble now.

UCanes - why would anyone refer to the U as Thug-U?

July 21, 2008  09:40 AM ET

We haven't heard Joe preaching from the pulpit lately about how pristine and perfect his program is compared to the outlaw state of college football played at some institutions.

Of course, it is hard to deliver the message when you have just returned from bailing out another holier than thou member of your extended family.

And not even a mention of his problems getting to the bathroom on time!

July 21, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Joe is also facing some time on an assisted living facility. Let's put that on here shall we?

Maybe the Old man should stop being so selfish and just freakin retire. It's obvious he cannot relate to his players like he used to./ And I don't care what anyone says, 81 year old begin to lose certain mental capacities...it's inevitable. An article yesterday in the Pittsburgh Trib siad he's thinking about up to 6 more years. Good luck with that! He can write out plays in his cream corn and strained peas!

Go Pitt!!

This might be Joes last year and he is primarily a figure head now. Penn State is in good shape.

To the bitter Pitt fans: Does 8-4, 5-6, 6-6, and 5-7 mean anything? Those are your last 4 season records. Pitt doesn't even have a field to play on. Explain how you can rip PSU and JoePa?

Joe gets a pass because Penn State is an otherwise excellent school, like Michigan, Stanford and Notre Dame. Coaches at schools that excel get more credit than they deserve for "running a clean program", versus say coaches at schools that are lame academically, like Miami, Ohio State, or any school in the SEC not named Vanderbilt.

My guess is that the number of problematic incidents at each school is roughly the same. Well, maybe not LSU, which has about 1/3 of its team back from last years National Championship, 1/3 lost to graduation or the NFL, and 1/3 wearing ankle bracelets.

We're talking about a man who came up with a defense for a Florida State player accused of a sexual assault and then placed blame on the victim during a press conference for a bowl game for a years back. Of course Paterno (like many other coaches) has no handle on what his players are doing.

Because they're 2 seperate topics. That arguement is and always has been crap. Or because I'm a pirate fan, does that mean I can't ever say anytthing bad about another baseball team? Hey, the Pirates suck...here's their record...you can't comment about anything.

Joe Pa is Old and out of touch, plain and simple,

You're right. Miami stinks, and is full of thugs. Hey, man, you brought it up!

July 21, 2008  01:53 PM ET

I can't believe it! A college football story and nobody has mentioned that Charlie Weis is fat. Maybe we can get along, all of us!

July 21, 2008  03:07 PM ET

Miami is a bunch of thugs - and ex- cons - its always been that way - there is a big difference between a brush fire and a wild fire - thats just guess who is an out of control wild fire? and by the way, the hurricanes have been real competitive recently

July 21, 2008  03:36 PM ET

You mean spoiled college football players with huge egos that have been pampered all their lives because they can play are getting in trouble?!?!? Never

July 21, 2008  06:40 PM ET

A coach doesn't have to know how to "relate" to his players ... he just has to know how to lead them. Enough of this coddling of football players -- they're getting a free ride and an education. The fact that JoePa has punished his players says a lot in this day and age of coaches who let their players get away with anything (sorry, Miami, you're still the poster university for bad behavior). Sure, JoePa's had trouble lately with players. Dude still commands respect.
