Phillies manager seethes after loss

It wasn't a classic Larry Bowa, eyes-bulging, neck-veins-popping rant, and it certainly wasn't a Dallas Green, 7.9-on-the-Richter-scale explosion. But Charlie Manuel is frustrated with his team's offense, and he let it be known after the Phillies wasted a golden effort from ace Cole Hamels in losing, 3-2, in 11 innings to the Florida Marlins today. "We get pitching like that, we've got to win," an exasperated Manuel said after Hamels allowed just four hits, two of which were home runs, over eight innings. Sitting behind a desk in the visiting manager's office at Dolphin Stadium, Manuel flicked a few jabs at his team's offense, then delivered a haymaker. "Our situational hitting is absolutely terrible," he said. "Absolutely off the chart, really."

Maybe it's b/c he usually takes out his best hitter late in the game. Maybe, just maybe.

July 21, 2008  07:59 AM ET

Almost EVERY time Hamels pitches a good game, the Phillies cant produce runs .. But they can put runs on the board for mediocre Kendrick & Moyer ...

July 21, 2008  08:47 AM ET

I wish I could say he was wrong, but he's absolutely right.

July 21, 2008  08:51 AM ET

I hope he gets on his team in the locker room, not just through the media.

we need to bench Rollins for a game or two after the Mets series....he looks totally lost and disinterested since winning his damn MVP

July 21, 2008  09:12 AM ET

I swear the Phillies CANNOT play good baseball until they are chasing someone ahead of them.....Last season they played their best ball when a few games behind the Mets.....It seems like every single time they are 2-3 games up on either FLA or NYM....they tail off and the offense goes into the tank.....like the last 2 weeks....the offense has sputtered....Rollins, Utley, Victorino.....all of them, with the exception of Howard (to a point)....cannot hit...

They may need to shake the lineup up and move a piece or two to bring in a player who can get singles, doubles, a walk when needed....

Go METS!

Yes, what Mz. Ahccrack said.

July 21, 2008  09:43 AM ET

He's right, the Phils need to find a way to pull games like that out.....it's what separates contenders from pretenders in the long run

I don't know if they need to go that far, but you're right about Rollins showing lack of interest. That play yesterday where he didn't hustle to second base, missing the chance to go to thrid, is one of the many ways in which the Phillies blew the game yesterday.

What's also killing me is the team's laid-back attitude. If you read the rest of the article, Rollins says, "He's [Manuel] pretty much right, but we'll get out of it... We don't get concerned until late. Coaches do that now. We go play." Obviously, Jimmy hasn't noticed that his team is in a tie for first place, but slipping fast. I'm tired of this "second-half team," "we still have time" BS. This team was cruising 6 weeks ago, with a comfortable lead over the division. Instead, they have a HUGE series with the Mets coming up, and they very easily could get swept. The Philies still have a chance, but Jimmy is making some pretty hefty assumptions if he thinks they'll cakewalk the rest of the season. They can't be resting on the laurels of last year's success. I can't help but shake my head in confusion at this point.

Out On Bail, that sounds like a name that would come from a New Yorker ....

yes, that does give a certain connotation...I also like similar expressions for Philadelphians:

Publicly Condemned
Documented by the CDC....
Origin of that smell...

I agree with a previous post Rollins is not anything close to the player that won the MVP last season. He appears to be going through the motions and is a shell of the player that sparked this team last year. Message to Mr. Rollins, you and your team won nothing last year. You won the division but got you brains beat in, in the first round of the playoffs. The Philly fans want and deserve a Championship, not what they are getting now. This team is going nowhere unless Rollins and Victorino wake up and start performing like they are capable of.

marlins are better the phillies and mets put together.

Deserve a Championship? .... whoa champ, easy on the blunts..... You deserve nothing. Your rotation still sucks and you're pointing at Jimmy Rollins? Any team in the league would take him off your hands in a heartbeat..... try focusing on the real problems of your team, like the gargantuan strikeout numbers from the middle of your order.....

your a braves fan why are you commenting about our first place phils. And Rollins does need to wake up and the fact you say our strikeouts are our biggest problem makes you look like an idiot. You oviously dont watch the phils games and know nothing about baseball. so good luck battling the nationals for last place.

July 21, 2008  12:54 PM ET

The Phillies didn't so much win the East last year as the Mets choked it away. And in the playoffs, the Phillies didn't exactly kick tail. So, Philly fans, you need to be worried. Atlanta is hanging around, the Mets are putting it together, and the Marlins are like a wart - they won't go away. The Phillies, with that rotation, could easily fall to fourth place.
