Free-agent forward Matt Barnes is scheduled to arrive in Phoenix Monday, expecting to sign a one-year veteran's minimum deal with the Suns after completing a physical. Barnes, 28, spent the past two seasons in a mostly reserve role with the Golden State Warriors. He collected a career-best 9.8 points and 4.6 rebounds in the 2006-07 season. Last season, he averaged 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds in 19.4 minutes per game. General Manager Steve Kerr and coach Terry Porter talked with Barnes by phone last week from Las Vegas, where the Suns were in NBA Summer League action. The team likes his shooting touch, ball-handling and big-game experience.

Big Game experience? Before last year the last time Golden State was in the playoffs was when Chris Webber played for them right? How does he have big game experience?

July 21, 2008  07:55 AM ET

his games against the Mavs. guess that counts.

Shrewd move, he brings toughness, defense and rebounding

Good pick up for the Suns. Could be another James Posey. Plays tough defense and can hit some shots.

July 21, 2008  09:34 AM ET

he had some good games in 06-07 but that intensity was not there 07-08 thats why he did not sign for more change. could help if he plays HIS BEST.

Matt Barnes just finds a way to latch on with teams.

Good Pick up!!! The Suns are going to be a suprising team just watch!!!

Suns are spending their offseason looking to sign players that won't make them better.

July 21, 2008  11:59 AM ET

He's a good shooter granted. But big game experience? The Suns have more big game experience than him, their core lineup of Raja Bell, Amare Stoudemire(injured though) Steve Nash, Leandro Barbosa, and Boris Diaw had all been to the conference finals 2 years ago and the second round last year and the first round this year.
They have much more experience than Barnes...he's still a decent player though.

Damn, I actually agree with dj on something. Barnes is a good acquisition.

July 21, 2008  01:19 PM ET

I really like his style of play, and I think the SUNS acquired him for insurance in case Grant Hill can't make it through the season.

It will be interesting to see what Barnes does in phoenix, other than get more ridiculous ink on his entire body.

Barnes will be a good signing, but he doesn't address our most glaring need: PG. Sarver's cheapness has caused many free agents to snub their noses at us and the opportunity to contribute on a winner to chase more money. To be perfectly honest, I don't blame them.

Until Sarver realizes that winning takes a pretty open wallet, the Suns are screwed.

He actually doesn't have that much tattoos compared to J.R. Smith, Carmelo Anthony, and Allen Iverson. The Nuggets crew.
But because he was in the warriors, who don't have alot of players with tattoos, much like the Spurs, he was known as the Dude with the Tattos.
J.R. Smith in San Antonio would stand out like hell...I just realized that.

Finally,... a good signing...Barnes is a very good complementary defensive player with decent range. FINALLY!

July 21, 2008  04:56 PM ET

If you're a Lakers fan, this hurts.

July 21, 2008  07:30 PM ET

Your right ahung, JR Smith is pretty intense, i see him and just think pain.

July 21, 2008  10:59 PM ET

What is the Suns' identity now? A halfcourt team with Shaq backing down defenders and Stoudemire cleaning up? A running team with Nash leading the break? I just don't know how things are gonna work out there. But with the Spurs, Rockets and Mavericks in Texas, the Clippers, Lakers and Warriors in California, the Hornets and the Jazz and the Trail Blazers, a couple of good teams aren't making the playoffs. My pick: Phoenix.
