Maddux wants to stay west

The Padres plan to ask right-hander Greg Maddux to reconsider his preference to be traded to a West Coast team only. But Maddux, who has complete no-trade protection, is unlikely to budge. Maddux's agent, Scott Boras, says the pitcher's desire to stay on the West Coast is "entirely related to his family." Maddux, who is married with two children makes his permanent home in Las Vegas. The Dodgers, then, loom as the only realistic possibility for Maddux, who has spent his entire career in the National League. The Padres, operating without leverage, would be at a disadvantage in trade discussions.

Billy Beane could bring him to Oakland for a low-level prospect.

Yeah, he needs rotation help now that he's traded his top 2 starters.

July 21, 2008  01:50 PM ET

Maddox might want to reconsider pitching at all since he's been getting rocked the last two months.

billy beane usually gets a few prosect that turn out to be "wonderful" maddux is old and washed up, he should just retire and get it over with.

July 21, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Who cares what he thinks.

July 21, 2008  02:18 PM ET

San Diego is stuck with him. He can't go to any other division without being lit up like a Christmas tree.

July 21, 2008  02:28 PM ET

Actually, a majority of Maddux's last 10 starts have been solid.

That said, he really isn't going to help anybody in a pennant chase at this point in his career.

July 21, 2008  03:53 PM ET

not help anyone??? He is one of the best pitcher/coaches around...he could immediately help a staff but just coaching the players...

July 21, 2008  04:16 PM ET

Cardsfan2 and Brad Wesley, you both have great points despite them being opposite. Maddux at one point in his losing streak was pitching real well, while the Padres anemic offense and bullpen were killing him. Lately however, he's been shaky himself. As a Padres fan, I feel his trade value is plummeting. I think he's staying right in San Diego for the year at this point.
At this point if you're a San Diego fan, the general opinion is likely, "whatever"...

July 21, 2008  04:27 PM ET

I wonder if Maddux would want to go to Atlanta.

Tell it like it is

Not according to his agent. He says west coast only.

July 21, 2008  07:55 PM ET

He's looking like he's content to slide right into retirement.

July 21, 2008  10:00 PM ET

if hes traded i dont see him leaving that division.......IF hes traded

July 22, 2008  03:49 AM ET

Well, from this photo, at least we know Maddux hasn't been anywhere near a steroid (or a tanning bed) in a long time.
