Yanks looking at Burnett?

Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi told Toronto reporters that he now doesn't expect to trade A.J. Burnett. But Burnett's Friday night start at Tampa Bay attracted more than a dozen scouts, including two from the Yankees. Several of the scouts in attendance didn't stay for the rest of the weekend series, a clear indication that they were in town strictly to watch Burnett. Even so, Ricciardi could be right, because the opt-out clause in Burnett's contract seems to be an issue with several teams that might otherwise be interested in a deal. The way they see it, they might just be trading for a two-month rental.

Yanks are already getting hot...made up 3 games in the last 3 days...even better with Burnett should a deal happen

July 21, 2008  01:41 PM ET

highly unlikely toronto trades within the division...esp to the yankees or red sox.

July 21, 2008  01:45 PM ET

The opt-out clause would have to be the issue for any team. I can't see anyone giving up premium prospects for AJ, when he can leave after the season.

July 21, 2008  01:46 PM ET

Let's see...the Blue Jay's GM doesn't think he will trade him and no team would want him because of his contract. SO WHY THIS GOD DAMN **** STORY?!? Weren't there enough threads with "Yankees" in the headline?

July 21, 2008  01:48 PM ET

this would be a great addition to the rotation.. hopefully if they are going to do this they do it fast and get him in pinstripes...

July 21, 2008  01:55 PM ET

This is so not happening.

July 21, 2008  02:55 PM ET

I sure hope this comes true! It would be great for the rotation! Also, hoping that JOBA (RULES), goes back to a closer! Go Yankees!!!

July 21, 2008  02:58 PM ET

With the way Rasner's pitching I wouldn't be suprised if they made the deal even with the opt-out clause

July 21, 2008  04:23 PM ET

Burnett may be traded, but no one wants to give much for him. I think the Jays will trade him, but it will have to get back more than the compensation draft picks to do so.

July 21, 2008  04:49 PM ET

The same scenario year after year !!! Yankees make their move and the Red Sox are there also - BUT - wait a minute - so are the Rays !!!

July 21, 2008  04:54 PM ET

Trades within the division hardly ever take place, much less during the stretch drive.

July 21, 2008  07:35 PM ET

I don't see the point in trading for Burnett since the only time he actually pitches well is when he faces the Yankees. He'll probably end up in the NL again, I foresee Ricciardi trading him for either an overweight, injury prone has-been or an underweight, injury-prone never-will-be........or maybe he'll be lucky enough to get both.

This guy has already been traded to half the teams in baseball.

i thoroughly doubt a.j will get traded. his last few outings have been sublime but its not worth it at this point.

July 22, 2008  07:55 AM ET

might be easier to compile a list of players that the Yanks AREN'T looking at...

July 22, 2008  10:11 AM ET

they should get him just so he can't pitch against them anymore...he seems to own the yanks...yet seems to own nobody else. they could avoid 4-5 losses per year just by acquiring him.

July 22, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Please, get him away from my Jays. He's an awful teammate and hasn't done much to show he's better than some .500 pitcher with "great" stuff. How great is he if he always gets hit?

Burnett will stay with the Jays - He has much to much class to allow a trade with the Yankess
