Orioles listening to offers for closer

The Orioles are willing to trade left-hander George Sherrill only if a potential suitor wants to overpay. The team's previous closer, Chris Ray, is recovering from elbow-ligament transplant surgery, and Sherrill is under club control for the next three seasons. The Angels, one of many teams seeking a left-handed reliever, could be a match - they're deep at shortstop, a position the Orioles have yet to fill since their trade of Miguel Tejada to the Astros last offseason.

This guy doesn't have a long enough track record as a closer to justify sending top prospects to Baltimore. He's been good this year, but his numbers are not great. If the price were not too high, he's be a good pickup, but he's definitely not someone worth overpaying for.

he is the only reason that they are winning any games, they should keep him, no trade him, they are the TB of last year

I agree, as much as I thank oursurprising bats, I agree with you NYY25to13

I don't know, but the guy's name is Sherrill for god's sake.

I think it would be great if the O's can really get something for him. Chris Ray will fill the void. However, the O's have seemed to rally around Sherrill this year and I think letting him go will cause a big moral let down that will be seen on the field

Yuk, Chris Ray

He seems to be the real deal. Sherrill looked great in the All Star game, didn't he? The O's know that lefty relievers are a hot commodity right now, and they could get some nice pieces. Imagine the LA bullpen with K-Rod, Sherrill, Shields and the gang. Starters wouldn't have to go but 6 to get a win, which is what they're doing often enough now.

When you've been as crappy as the Orioles and you have someone who is actually pretty good - why trade him and go back into previous / future mediocrity ???

July 21, 2008  05:33 PM ET

Watched this guy dazzle the past few seasons. Why let him shine in someone else's pen? Unless you make them bleed a few can't-miss prospects.

you have once again shown how ignorant yankees fans are of teams outside themselves and the redsox. we are 5 and a half back of the yanks, ten out of the al east lead, and 3 games under .500. hes been great this year and the only reason we would trade him is because we have a better closer in ray.

July 21, 2008  07:45 PM ET

The O's should not trade him. I don't see any team giving up enough prospects to make it worthwhile to do so. He does make it a bit more interesting than it needs to be at times, but, overall, he's doing well and needs to stay in Baltimore.

The O's do have Ray coming back. If the Orioles could get a real shortstop from the Angels, and maybe another piece, perhaps they should do it. Relief pitchers are usually easier to find than quality shortstops.

George Sherrill was the All-Star game MVP period. And I am a Red Sox fan. The man pitched his heart out during very demanding situation, I am still angry he didnt win.

If the O's part with him, that would be a big mistake. If the O's wish to trade a lefty reliever to the Angels, they should offer Burres.
