Larry Allen hasn't retired yet, and it's unclear whether the 11-time Pro Bowl guard wants to return to the 49ers - but coach Mike Nolan said Monday that Allen has indicated he would like to play this season for somebody. Nolan said he has not spoken to Allen, 36, but said the free agent told offensive line coach George Warhop recently that he would like to play a 15th NFL season. Warhop has been his position coach dating back to their years with the Cowboys. Nolan said he made a few calls to Allen but had not heard from him. The agent, Marv Demoff, couldn't be reached Monday, but early last month he said he was talking to "a couple other teams" and said Allen was continuing to work out.

Retire, and begin a career in the UFC or MMA.....your big enough to take on the "fat" boys in the heavyweight division! That is if you can lift your leg(s) up of the ground.

I wonder just how many players quietly retire never to be heard from again.

I would wager something like 99% Lady. Only the "name" players get attention. The perennial backups get dropped by a team and you forget they even existed.

Another one of those former great ones who can't call it quits and choose to be a shell of their former selves.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

The AMAZING thing about this is that this HUGE man battled in the trenches for 14 yrs at a remarkably high level and can even consider playing a 15th. No doubt he is not the force he used to be but I imagine none of us could endure the physcial assaults he expereinced!!

July 22, 2008  01:49 PM ET

Go retire you big fat cowboy!!!

Hey KC Hink, name a team that has made the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years, has a roster stacked with youth, and had every opportunity to make noise this year, and vie for the title the next...that's right, The Deadskins! I pray that you're not a Chiefs fan, for this could get far uglier
