Posada may be out until '09

It hurts Jorge Posada only when he throws or thinks about having to blow off the rest of 2008 in order to play an entire 2009. When he hits, the only discomfort has been with the results. Posada went to the 15-day disabled list yesterday to try to strengthen his shoulder, admitting that if he comes back this season it will be as a first baseman and DH on a team that already has too many first basemen-DHs.

Too bad isn't it!

July 22, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Shut him down, get the surgery man.

July 22, 2008  08:56 AM ET

Hey lets go get Bonds and DH him, we need the offense, stop putting all these excuses and do it, its a low cost fix and we can always release him if it doesn???t work. Molina can do the job defensible but we need to stack up the offense to compensate for is lack of offense..... But we have to do it NOW!!!! so he can be ready for the stretch run.

July 22, 2008  09:11 AM ET

hahaha...nice contract he got tho

July 22, 2008  09:29 AM ET

That's not good.

July 22, 2008  09:35 AM ET

He needs to go ahead and get the surgery done, so he doesn't miss next season too.. makes a whole lot more sense... they need to get it going to he isn't out another whole season.

July 22, 2008  09:52 AM ET

hell he is still better than Varitek...in fact Molina is better than Varitek

July 22, 2008  09:57 AM ET

I never wanted the Yanks to give him that big extension. Last year was such an obvious "contract year" season for him it was ridiculous. He then decided to hold the Yanks hostage for a huge deal after they extended Mo and let Torre walk. I like Jorge alot but that contract he got was ridiculously stupid for a catcher his age. Get the surgery and get ready for next year Posada.

July 22, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Forget the contract. This really hurts the lineup. It makes the back end of the lineup seriously weaker, especially if they are resting anyone else.

July 22, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Exhibit A... why the Sox should NOT go overboard offering Varitek a large / long-term contract

July 22, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Agreed metro.....Posada was always a good player for the Yanks, but nowhere near the level he was at last year

July 22, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Last year was the first year that Posada was not dealing with his child's medical issues. I think Posada is more like last year than all of the other years, when healthy.

July 22, 2008  12:22 PM ET

To bad the hold Yankee team does not go on the DL.Pis s on the Yanks

July 22, 2008  12:35 PM ET

Everyone knew he'd be phased out as a first baseman. A 40 yr old catcher? Not in this day and age! Molina is the best defensive catcher in the league IMO.

Even with Giambi playing well, if he comes back this season, it's not like they simply have to play Sexson over Jorge. They are paying Sexson chump change and can bring him in defensively or against the righty/lefties (whatever he's not hitting .100 against).

July 22, 2008  12:37 PM ET

Jorge did not carry a heavy burden in his early days as catcher so I think you might be surprised at how long his legs hold out. Age is definately a concern though. If nothing else he will be able to pass the mantle, he will be able to train his replacement, much like Girardi did for him.

July 22, 2008  12:39 PM ET

i always liked posada, and i'm glad he re-signed with the team. unfortunately these things happen. injuries are part of the game. get the surgery, jorge. and maybe we can get through the season with molina and moulder.

July 22, 2008  12:59 PM ET

He needs to stop and focus on next year.. sometimes not correcting the problem right ends a career early...Yanks can survive this and this guy is needed long term.

July 22, 2008  01:07 PM ET

This will really hurt the back of the lineup. Though Cano seems to be showing some good signs recently. Melky needs to pick it up if the Yankees are going to continue to close some ground.

July 22, 2008  01:21 PM ET

Tell him to get back on the 'roids and HGH.

Why? Are you in need of company?
