NHL to repay Niedermayer

Scott Niedermayer is getting his money back ... all of it ... every single cent of the $490,909.08 he was improperly fined by the NHL for missing Anaheim's training camp last season, The Post has learned. As originally reported by The Post on April 20, the former Devil had been fined under Article 15.3 (f) of the collective-bargaining agreement even though he had been granted permission by GM Brian Burke to take an unpaid leave of absence in the wake of Anaheim's 2007 Stanley Cup victory, the fourth championship of the defenseman's career. But the NHL, which ordered Burke and the Ducks to withhold the nearly half-million dollars of Niedermayer's $6.75M salary, acted in error. Rather than file a grievance, Niedermayer and the NHLPA negotiated a settlement with the league.

I can see the NHL's side on this.
The trend of veterans skipping camp and good portions of the season needs to stop.

Agreed, Yoda. The Niedermeyer/Selanne situation last season was a joke.

If the player is granted a leave of absence, and the league knew about the approval, it never should have come to this in the first place.

1) This is coming from he New York Post, so it is of dubious veracity to say the least

2) The league finding in favor of one of Brian Burke's players/ I am shocked

Spiny, I am flabbergasted at what you are insinuating....... lol

He should be fined. He missed half the season, so he shouldn't get half his pay, regardless of whether the Ducks said it was okay or not. He wasn't injured, he just took time off. His contract should basically become pro-rated.

July 22, 2008  10:09 AM ET

The fine should have been kept in place. If for whatever reason you miss camp, you have to bear the consequences. I a rookie does it, you can bet he's gonna have to pay the fine and will probably get traded in the next year...
