Blackhawks coach on hot seat

The Hawks appear to be a playoff team, but it won't be easy to get there in a seriously strong Western Conference. Hawks coach Denis Savard will enter his second full season behind the bench under the gun to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and for only the second time in the last 10 seasons. Adding to the pressure on Savard is the fact he is working in the final year of his contract. Some believed the Hawks might announce an extension for their coach at the convention, but apparently chairman Rocky Wirtz wants to see more results from Savard before making that commitment. General manager Dale Tallon's contract also expires after next season. Savard is well aware of the lofty expectations on his team and welcomes them.

"Commit to the Indian!"

With the talent they have now, plus the recent acquisitions...the Blackhawks should make the playoffs...if they don't,then Savard and Tallon should be cut loose.

They're a young, upcoming team, and Savard is in his second season........and he's on the hot seat already????

July 22, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Nothing like putting the fire to a coach.. should go either way...

July 22, 2008  09:53 AM ET

You never know until what half way in the season..............

July 22, 2008  09:57 AM ET

We'll see... I think that Savard is a good coach. Chicago should make the playoffs this year. I really think that they could be as high as a 5 seed in the West. That team is scary good.

Well now that they have a decent netminder and added some marquee players of course there's pressure

WAH

Savard has that team playing some good hockey after years of boring, grinding, checking style implemented by previous coaches! You can't rush a developing team and demand results overnight. It just doesn't work that way!

They're moving in the right direction, doing the right things and the players like playing for Savard. Denis is the right man for the job. And, with some of the players they got rid of and the ones they've added, playoffs are deffinetely not out of the question !

But now that the players are there, they really have to give him 2 seasons

spaul.........the great one for example

Take it easy, Wirtz! I can feel the greed rising in Chicago. Savard is a good coach. Even if you don't make it deep into the p;ayoffs this year, he should get another chance. Last year, Toews got injured oherwise they might have made the playoffs already. The west is tough though...

The Hawks will be an exciting team to watch next season.Thats for sure. I for one will try to catch as many games as i can. Huet is outta the eastern conference!! yeahhhhhhhh!!!! Hopefully he plays as well in the western con. as he did in the east. con. Watch for Toews to score 30+ goals. This kid is awesome. I wonder if he'll play in the Olympics?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

So you're talking about how great he was never winning a playoff series?

July 22, 2008  01:49 PM ET

If the team is so talented, why fire Tallon? He built that team.

You don't think he's a little bit young OtherOne? Not sure I like it at all, but I wouldn't have a clue who to suggest in his place .....

What are you talking about Bombers guy? Are you complaining about your team being 0-4? And starting a back-up next game?

Great choice for a Captain! Jonathan Toews is a Mark Messier in the making. I've seen him play a lot and he reminds me a lot of the Moose in his younger days. He's a fierce competitor. He's got skills. He can score. He's tough as nails. The Hawks hit the jackpot with this guy!
