With Holliday pricey, Mets look to Texas

With the price for Matt Holliday likely to include Carlos Beltran, the Mets have begun looking elsewhere for an outfield bat. New York had a scout at last night's White Sox-Rangers game to watch Texas. The Rangers likely would move outfielder Marlon Byrd but are unlikely to deal Milton Bradley. The Mets also might be checking out available Texas bullpen arms and could be interested in available starting pitcher Vicente Padilla, but Padilla wasn't pitching last night, so the scout wasn't there to look at him.

Byrd and Padilla to the Mets...for what? I'd like to hear the other half to see what the Mets are offering. If they won't part with Beltran, well, they'd better be willing to give up a starter or a minor leaguer who is ready to start in the majors.

"I'm Milton your brand new son!"

How bout this...Byrd for Johan Santana...Strait up. come on Mets we need some pitchers down here in Tejas.

Texas has a lot of young guys coming up soon. Just think... what if the Rangers had actually kept Chris Young, John Danks and Edinson Volquez? They may trade a couple of the older guys, but this team could be scary good soon if a couple of pitchers can turn the corner. Here's another thought. Would Ben Sheets consider signing with the Rangers?

July 22, 2008  11:04 PM ET

Ben Sheets is going to sign with whoever pays him the most, just like Sabathia.

The Rangers are just around the corner from being a team that strikes fear in the hearts of everyone they play. Hopefully the press, fans nationwide, and most importantly, Rangers brass realize that dont need to be a late season farm club for the perennial east coast contenders, or anyone for that matter. Dear Jon Daniels: Dont trade ANYBODY. Your team is on the rise. Just develop a couple of pitchers through the system like you have the position players, and this team contends for a title very, very soon.

Please Beltran for Bradley, Byrd or Padilla! That would be a steal for Texas. Niether of the three mentioned for Beltran are a worthy mention in a trade for him. Actually Texas doesn't have a player that fits the Mets needs....Not even Padilla in the rotation. They are better off trading for Street's.

July 25, 2008  09:48 AM ET

I wouldn't be opposed for including Beltran in a deal for Matt Holliday. I doubt he'd take it though.

July 26, 2008  10:23 AM ET

tell it like it is........ agree of course on danks and young but DANG BOY!!! you don't really want a do over on the volquez trade do you. ??? I sure don't.

I don't see why we'd want Beltran back.... I am super fine with Crush Davis growing into that job. I don't really want to trade byrd, but give me a good young starter and I'll put a bow on his head and ship him off. keep beltran though.

Texas is not going to trade Bradley he and Ron Washington are to close.
