Contenders looking for relievers

Add the Marlins to the list of teams pursuing Brian Fuentes, the Rockies' left-handed closer. The Marlins, who are far more focused on acquiring bullpen help than adding a veteran catcher, are expressing interest in all of the top available relievers, according to major-league sources. Rival teams continue to say that the Rockies' price is high for Fuentes, who will be a free agent at the end of the season. The Rockies counter that Fuentes is a three-time All-Star who is on a roll. The Rays, Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox, Mets and Yankees are among the other clubs that have shown interest in Fuentes. The Orioles want closer value for George Sherrill, who is not a free agent until after the 2011 season. The Cardinals, who lead the majors with 23 blown saves, have a greater need for Sherrill, but the Angels remain perhaps the best fit because of their depth at shortstop - a position of dire need for the Orioles.

A baseball thread in the NFL section. How exciting. Does Fuentes play for the Broncos as well?

Any position of dire need needs to be filled. Just ask my loving wife who maintains all our finances and makes all our purchases and gives me $20 a week for play money. Oh, yeah, baby 20 smackarooosss....for over 30 years..... Yeah, a fortune!! I am one lucky hombre.

Sherill might be a good fit for the Cards, since he is signed thru 2011, but we don't have a top flight SS in the organization to deal to Baltimore. Just OF's and young pitchers, and a top hitting catcher if they need it.

No one wants to hear this but we're going to make do with what we have this year. We're a year ahead of schedule and not ready to change the plan. I look for moves during the offseason using those young player - except the pitchers. I don't see us trading them.

I actually agree with Mo on this. Let the Cubs and Brewers mortgage their future going for it all this year. We have to keep this decade and the next in mind. We need the Cards to put much more pressure on them in the next week so they mortgage their futures even more. Gallagher will be pitching in the bigs long after Harden make his last trip to the DL.

I agree with CardsFan2 and 10Rings. The Cardinals were not supposed to contend this year. Stay the course, let the young guys get their experience, get the pitching lined up for next year, get a middle infielder, and gear up for 2009 when the Brewers have lost two pitching studs and the Cubs will have to reflect on another lost opportunity. (Hey, Cubs fans, sorry, but you got to prove that the curse isn't real - I think you're scared to death that your boys are gonna choke.)

That 'pitch' is heading towards first base.

I agree with not mortgaging the future. I don't want to see Rasmus, Todd, Boggs, Freese or the young outfielders moved. I'm mixed on Anderson, because I don't see him getting an opportunity in STL, so if we can move him to fix the bullpen this year and still contend, I think we should do it.
