Rockies want Buchholz for Fuentes
Baseball's non-waiver trading deadline is a little more than a week away, and while the Red Sox' needs may be obvious, the solutions are not. The bullpen is seen as an obvious weakness. Collectively, Red Sox relievers have lost more games than they did last season - and more than a third of the schedule remains. The Sox are one of many teams intrigued with Colorado closer Brian Fuentes, but the Rockies have asked for Clay Buchholz in return - far too steep a price for a two-month rental. Fuentes can become a free agent at the end of the season. However, the trade market doesn't offer much in the way of answers. "The asking price (for quality relievers) is sky-high right now," said general manager Theo Epstein. "It just doesn't make sense." Other lefties said to be available include Pittsburgh's Damaso Marte and Kansas City's Ron Mahay.

The prices may come down in the next week. I can't see smart organizations making mistakes this large. Premium, proven prospects for a 2 month (well 3 counting playoffs), that's too much.
I believe the Cards best hope for relief will come from within. Maybe a minor leaguer or more likely a returning starter. We have two coming back who would be up to it. One of them has done it before. Either of them could do it for 2, hopefully 3 months.

I would rather see the Sox get Mahay. He's a proven middle guy and would probably come cheaper.

I think that the Rockies probably tell everyone that they want Buchholz knowing that they'll never get him- but thinking that it will make teams feel better about giving up a prospect one level below Buchholz.

They might as well ask for Buchholz. If they get him, great. If not, Fuentes will net them a couple draft picks in the offseason. So why not ask?
