Barkley pays busboy's tuition

During a visit to Saloon last summer, Charles Barkley asked Christian Abate how he was enjoying teaching, and was disappointed to learn that Abate had still not returned to Temple because of problems securing financial aid. Abate, 28, of South Philly, started at Temple in 1997, months after graduating from St. John Neumann High. Sir Charles told Abate he would like to help him with his tuition, and Abate wasn't sure how to respond. Barkley didn't give him much time, telling Abate that he had the length of Barkley's meal to decide. Abate wisely accepted. Barkley says that helping Abate is in line with his efforts to aid in education, which has been important to him in recent years. Barkley's given $1 million to his Alabama high school Leeds, another million to Corningstone High, in a poor area of Birmingham, and $1 million to Auburn University, where he played before being drafted by the Sixers in 1984.

As a Barkley fan it's great to read some positive, non-controversial news about him for a change! This only serves to make me an even bigger fan of the "Round Mound"!

Good job Charles... I could use some money too...

July 23, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Must be the NBA offseason. Everything is news.

July 23, 2008  08:37 AM ET

That is nice Charles..I bet the media won't give this positive story about you much airplay....

Bravo to Charles Barkley for this noble charitable effort !!
Many athletes forget about the value of education because they have had more lucrative careers in sports, so it's good to see Barkley emphasizing education in a fresh endeavor.
On a related note, if these athletes want to challenge themselves, they should go back and finish their degrees as well (the ones that left college early - I don't know if Barkley fits this mold). It's impressive for someone to make a mark both in physical and mental pursuits. One example is Arnold Schwarzenegger, who started as a champion bodybuilder, then went back to college to finish a business degree while also becoming a top actor, and now having become a decent politician.

How is this a rumor? and who cares?

July 23, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Umm.. the students at those schools probably care.. their parents probably care.. the teachers probably care.. and I'm a resident of Alabama so I care

July 23, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Musty Rusty you are an idiot, obviously you care because you stopped and read the story. Way to go Barkley, I agree this probably will not receive as much attention of a Pac Man or Vick story but still good to hear that not all athletes have lost touch with reality.

Hey Charles, wanna buy me a house? or a car?

July 23, 2008  09:44 AM ET

And?

July 23, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Hey Charles....

I bombed out of college back in the 70s and have been stuck working as a go-go dancer and jello shot boy in gay bars ever since.....

Save me Chuck!

This isn't just a rumor thread. It's NOTES and Rumors. I didnt like Barkley when he played but since he has retired I have come to like him. He is funny and seems to be an alright guy.

July 23, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Hey Charles, can you help pay my tuition? I have ambition and I even defended you when everybody said you had a gambling problem...even though you do have a gambling problem.

July 23, 2008  10:24 AM ET

Dang, it's hard to hate someone when they do this kind of stuff for others...Still don't like him though...

July 23, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Chuck has always stated in his TNT gig that young black kids should stop dreaming ONLY about basketball or rap, and get their education first. Not stereotyping anything here, but I think he has a valid argument, and he's putting his money where his mouth is. Everyone cannot become LBJs or Usher's.
A college degree would put them on track to pursue whatever they want to.
if Chuck has an education fund for poor kids, I'm happy to contribute
