Why MLB is upset with Cubs

The Cubs' fine for violations related to the June draft of first-year players was a whopping $500,000, SI.com has learned. Major League Baseball ruled that the Cubs violated a couple of baseball rules, including failing to report a signing to MLB's New York offices and putting the player on the field before receiving approval for the signing from MLB offices. The Cubs were said by people familiar with the case to have exacerbated the situation by how they responded to MLB's concerns. MLB higherups apparently didn't believe Cubs people were completely forthcoming regarding their actions in the case when questioned about them. Baseball disallows teams from making pre-draft deals, but it isn't known whether such an early deal is related to this case. However, the extent of the fine makes it clear how displeased MLB"s powers are about the situation.

You should concentrate on the drug problem Selig. Oh, I forgot, you condone it.

July 23, 2008  07:54 AM ET

I think FN should put a little caption on that pic of Selig: 'Hmmm....I wonder if this will make people forget steroids and PEDs.'
(a nod to Twins Fan 2.....I completely agree!)

MLB is cracking down on rules violations.

The TRUTH is imposing deadline on Selig:

PUNISH Offenders from the report by the end of this season or resign!

July 23, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Yeah, because something so minor deserves this much attention, Bud. What about your complete and abject failure from stopping 'roiders likes Bonds from running around and making a mockery of the sport? You have been a horrible Commissioner, and quite frankly, nobody save for a few malcontents will miss you once you vacate your position of power.

July 23, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Why is MLB angry with the Cubs ??? Because they can't win a damm World Series !!!

July 23, 2008  12:42 PM ET

So, Bud is pissed because the Cubs signed a player they drafted, and then let him throw a few pitches at Wrigley Field before they sent him to the minors so they could see his technique.

Seriously Bud, you've lost it when this is even worthy of your attention.

Why don't you fine Manny for throwing employee's to the ground in anger?

July 23, 2008  12:44 PM ET

And Bud says his ties to the Brewers are gone.

July 23, 2008  12:54 PM ET

When was the last time we say an MLB team fined for the "up and up" activities in Latin America? You can't tell me there is no hanky panky going on there?

July 23, 2008  01:07 PM ET

How was the player? I hope he was worth the 500k. Man it seems like everyone is trying to get a hand in on the money, from MLB getting 500k to Packers trying to get draft picks from Vikes it all a bunch of bullsh!t.

Nice try bbech. A 500k fine towards the Cubs doesn't help the brewers. For those of us who believe the punishment doesn't fit the crime, what should the punishment be? A warning? The punishment must be enough to discourage the other teams from following suit, regardles of what rule(s) is broken. And though 500k is stiff, there are other punishments besides monetary fines that would be considered more harsh. Cubbies havin' a bad week it seems.

July 23, 2008  03:37 PM ET

It seems that when anyone does anything, Selig wants to hold everyones hand. LET THE OWNERS DO WHAT THEY NEED TO DO AND YOU BE A COMMISHIONER!!!!

July 23, 2008  05:18 PM ET

You really need to keep your nose clean if you're going to bust the lsot system.

slot system. Don't bust the slot system unless you're going to keep your nose clean on every actual rule.
