Childress leaves NBA for Greece
Atlanta Hawks fans won't have to fret over the fate of restricted free agent swingman Josh Childress anymore. That's because Childress is no longer a Hawk. He said he agreed to terms Wednesday morning on a three-year contract with Olympiakos of Greece that is worth far more than $20 million initially reported. The deal is the most lucrative current contract in European basketball and the biggest in Euroleague history. Childress' move is a blow to the Hawks, who have no recourse to match an offer made to a restricted free agent by a non-NBA team. The Hawks retain Childress's NBA rights for at least two years, but they lose one of the league's best and most efficient sixth men without immediate compensation.

This is what happens when we have a weak dollar and a booming European economy.
Smart move Josh.

The people who own the Hawks and the Trashers are incompetent jackasses. Plus, though they are rich by most standards, they aren't mega rich. Oh well. I live near Atlanta, and I'd rather be in Greece than Atlanta, too.

Current exchange rate is $1.58 dollars per euro. If his deal were worth $20 mil euros, that's over $31 mil US. Dude is making $10 mil/year.
NBA what? I would surmise that at the next round of negotiations for the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the players are going to certainly point out the glaring disparity and that the salary cap is going to have to be addressed accordingly. Otherwise, the NBA will invade Europe...just not the way D. Stern planned.

GOOD, THE NBA AND AMERICAN SPORTS LEAGUES THINK THEY ARE INVINCIBLE AND TRY TO BULLY PLAYERS. THIS IS WHAT THE NBA GETS. I HOPE MORE PLAYERS START TO LEAVE. WHY BE THE 6TH, 7TH, OR 8TH MAN ON THE BENCH, WHEN YOU CAN START AND GET PAID MORE TO GO OVERSEAS.
I BET ALL OF THE OKLAHOMA CITY PLAYERS ARE CONSIDERING DOING THE SAME JUST TO GET OUT OF OK CITY. I WOULD.
I HOPE HE EVEN PLAYS FOR THEIR OLYMPIC TEAM!!

This is why the Hawks will never be contenders. They still have a chance to match the salary, but reports are saying they will not do it. This is a guy on any other team would start. He does not complain about starting and all he does is come in and give 13ppg 4rpg and play great defense. ATL will be a doormat team again because Childress was the reason why the Hawks was able to play four 6'8 - 6'9 players and Hartford at center. The Hawks will suffer if they don't match that offer. He's worth it.

A little bitter over the fact that they left? I would imagine they were more apt to look into this when they were stuck in seatle then in OKC where the fans were dying for a team. Seatle had its shot and people didnt show up, hence the move... get over it

Alot of people seem to think this guy should get more or that guy should get this. The NBA is a business, the next collective bargining agreement should keep players from leaving to go overseas for more money, not find ways to pay them more here. If that happens the NBA will slowly deteriorate. The last thing the NBA needs is something that will inflate players salaries.

Another botched negotiation on the part of the Hawks' front office. They had every opportunity to sign Childress, and didn't. Well at least now they have the money to sign Josh Smith.

20 Million, wow he is WAY OVERPAID, but they want to make the sport more popular over there. Crazy but he will want to eventually come back to the NBA becasue Americans that like basketball dont grow up with dreams to play in Greece, they dream of the NBA. We grew up watching Bird, Magic, and Jordan. Get your money, secure your future, and come back to the nba in a few years.

His agent is an intelligent individual. Take a overall good basketball player that would never have been a starter in the NBA, nor ever average higher then 15 points a year, and place him in a European League that is thriving for better basketball and better players. He will go over there and easily average more then 20 points a game, be highly publicized, and assist in the positive improvement and marketing of the European League.
You will soon see a line of McDonald All-American players that will follow lead and opt out of 1 year of college basketball and earn a wage and play in the European League.
If I was an shoe company I would make a drastic effort to have him in some sort of shoe deal.....

Dear Mr. Ainge'
It appears that you were satisfied with one and done. After winning the championship, you then proceeded to attempt to again do business on the cheap. In so doing, you forfeited the rights to James Posey, an excellent perimeter defemder and 3 point shooter. When you manage to come to your senses, please notify us, and we will be glad to make the fans aware that you are indeed relevant, and worth mentioning.
Sincerely, FanNation
