Orioles consider dealing closer

While talk of a trade involving Mariners pitcher Erik Bedard has dissipated with each of Bedard's aches and pains, one of the players traded in the Bedard deal, Orioles closer George Sherrill, could still be dealt. The Marlins, Dodgers, Cardinals, Phillies and Brewers were among teams scouting the Orioles game on Tuesday night. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the Cardinals were interested, and the Baltimore Sun reported interest from the Brewers in Sherrill, one of the All-Star heroes who's done a nice job in Baltimore (29 of 35 in saves, 3.89 ERA). Sherrill is known for having decent stuff but exceptional guts.

Agreed. But I expect more of an "Impressive that is not" out of you, Yoda. Cut the King's English crap out.

Apologize, I do.

If I was a manager, I'd want him on my team.

July 24, 2008  09:32 AM ET

He shouldn't be a closer on a contending team, but you could do worse.

Now, that's more like it

The Brewers don't need one as bad as the Cardinals do......

wasn't this a story a couple of weeks ago.. THE Orioles really should keep him since he is the only one that seems like can win some games for them.

The Orioles should trade Sherrill. It makes no sense having a decent closer when they don't even have decent starters.

I agree that they should deal him while his stock is "high". He is merely a reliever that has done allright in a closer's role.

And what doyou do next year? I mean you should try and keep the parts that are working at some point.

I Orioles FINALLY has some talent on their roster and what do they do, talking about trading people, the O's have to be one of the worst run teams in baseball

I was hinting that they should try and maybe get a starter for Sherrill. If they want to hold onto him that's fine, but if they expect to somehow compete next year they need to make starting pitching their biggest priority this offseason.

July 24, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Might as well...are they even relevant anymore???

Erik "the hack" Bedard couldn't pitch his way out of little league this year. What a cry baby!

For the nay sayers...

...the guy is in his 1st season as a full-time closer, yet he's 3rd in the AL in saves behind only Papelbon and K-Rod, averages more than one K per inning, pitches for a rotten team in a tough division, gets selected for the All-Star game AND pitches well in the game. He has 6 blown saves; Papelbon has 4. Um, yeah, I think he's done "a nice job" in Baltimore.

There was a song back in the 70's that applies today to the Orioles, Pirates, Mariners, etc. it is called "Spinning Wheels" by Blood Sweat and Tears !!!
