Complication in Okafor deal

As if this Emeka Okafor situation won't get complicated enough already, I'm told by front-office folk from two other NBA franchises that an NBA salary-cap rule -- base-year compensation -- makes it challenging to trade a restricted free agent for fair value. When a player signs a contract that dramatically raises his salary (as Okafor seemingly would in any sign-and-trade), he can't be traded for at least the next six months for a player of comparable salary. Essentially a team acquiring Okafor would need the cap room to absorb his entire new salary, while sending back roughly half that to the Bobcats.

stay okafor take that 1 year deal

What kind of reporting is this? Either there's a rule or there isn't. Do some work and look it up. You shouldn't need to rely on being 'told by front-office folk from two other NBA franchises'.

This is what happens when you take a gamble. It was perfect for Lebron but guys like Okafor, Deng and Gordon, they should have taken the offer they had last year. Now it's pretty tough for all three. The teams have the leverage because they didn't go above and beyond what is expected of themselves.

Dampier for Okafor straight up.

I think Miami can offer Haslem for him and that would qualify. Haslem makes about 6 mill and If Okafor makes about 12 mill a year, then the Heat should go for it. He's the next Alonzo Mourning and with Alonzo there to tutor him, he will be awesome. What is Riley waiting for? with all the forwards we have, honestly he's more valuable than Marion given the Heat's situation. If we needed a forward than Marion would be. Then we could sign and trade Marion next year or let Marion walk, sign DWade and ask Dwade to politic for Lebron to come and be Marion's replacement.

You are crazy if you think the Bobcats are going to trade Okafor in their division for Haslem

Now when Joshua sign with Olympiakos, Emeka will sign with Panathinaikos.

Stay Omeka!Stay!

It just wouldnt be a T and R without a senseless Heater trade

Heater

Your suggestion don't add up. 12 million is a big difference from 6 million. This means that the Heat is willing to pay the additional 6 million. Bobcats will be very happy w/ this.

Guam Baller the trade rule says you can't make the trade unless the other team can trade half the value that is why he said that. I know it doesn't make sense but that is the odd rule. The real question is why would any team trade for him now, they can just wait til next year and not give up anything for him. Okafor will make around $12 million because there is very few players like him in the league. You need a post player that can bring you a double double every night and defend the rim. And leaving Charlotte is the best thing that could happen to him. The only person that thrives in Charlotte is Gerald Wallace, and that is because he couldn't start on any other team.

July 24, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Okafor may have to just sign the one year deal. Next year he will be unrestricted. He would be a fool to stay with this team. They will suck for years.

July 24, 2008  11:55 AM ET

it's not about restricted/non-restricted.....
its about NBA teams realizing that he is NOT a 12 million + a year player.

He is a GREAT player to have on your team-
but he is offensively limited-
& you cannot invest that much money in an offensive non-factor

Dude; do you actually know anything about basketball? Okafor is a legitimate double-double. He's playing out of his natural position on a team that sucks, and has made no effort to get better. If the Bobcats had a center, both his scoring and rebounds would significantly increase. Try watching some games instead of Sportcenter.

Okafor is a solid option on the right team. That team isn't Charlotte. He has to be signed and dealt.

July 24, 2008  12:56 PM ET

Come to the nuggets

July 24, 2008  01:22 PM ET

just let him sign with someone else, he's wasting away with the bobcats anyways...
